Following speculation that Safeway may be considering "strategic alternatives," Safeway executives during their latest conference call confirmed just that — the supermarket retailer placed itself on the sales block. Before that conference call, analysts were already putting two and two together and coming up with two viable suitors for the Safeway footprint — private investment firm Cerberus, also known as New Albertsons, and supermarket giant Kroger, which has just closed on Harris Teeter for $2.5 billion.

Cerberus is said to be the lead bidder, but Kroger shouldn't be ruled out. But what would Cerberus or Kroger be getting if they purchased Safeway outright for almost $10 billion? In addition to 1,335 locations and a $2.7 billion book of prescription business, there would be some intangibles in the deal as well — namely Safeway's relatively advanced Just for U loyalty program and a yet-to-be launched health-and-wellness platform that's supposed to evolve Safeway over the next decade from being a food retailer into being a health solutions center.

According to Omnico Group’s latest national primary research campaign, more than 77% of Americans would be less likely to return to a store if they experienced long checkout lines, supporting the perception that consumers who "want it here" expect to get it fast.

Sears announced the launch of the FitStudio.com "Points for Progress" program, whereby members of the Shop Your Way loyalty card program can register for FitStudio.com, connect a fitness app or device and earn loyalty points through physical activity. BOLINGBROOK, Ill. — Ulta Beauty posted strong double-digit gains during its third quarter thanks in part to strength in sales of prestige cosmetics and skin care and strong online sales.

Sales for the quarter ended Oct. 27 rose 22.4% to $618.8 million. Same-store sales rose 6.8%, including the impact of e-commerce sales.

Net income increased 19.1% to $45.4 million compared with $38.2 million. Income per diluted share rose 18.6% to 70 cents per share, including 2 cents per diluted share related to a severance charge.

CHICAGO — A growing number of consumers are concerned about their privacy when they sign up for loyalty card programs, according to a new survey.

Market research firm Mintel found that 32% of Americans believe the privacy of their personal information is an important attribute of a loyalty program, and one-tenth or more express frustration or dissatisfaction with too much personal information being requested during enrollment and lack of control over the privacy of their information. The report was based on a survey of 2,000 adults.
