All of Target's stores in Canada have been certified for sustainability, the retailer said Thursday.

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — All of Target's stores in Canada have been certified for sustainability, the retailer said Thursday.

Target said that all of the 68 stores it operates in Canada have been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED certification; most recently, 44 were certified. The company plans to have all 124 stores it is opening this year LEED-certified.

SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 2012 Superior Goal Achievement Award, one of the agency's honors for commercial refrigeration achievements by GreenChill Partners.

Food Lion officials received the award Monday at the FMI Energy & Store Development Conference in Baltimore, Md. The annual achievement award is in recognition of Food Lion meeting its GreenChill commitment for reducing refrigerant emissions.

Weis Markets on Tuesday announced it will open the Lehigh Valley’s first LEED-certified grocery store in Fogelsville, Pa. in December.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Tuesday announced it will open the Lehigh Valley’s first LEED-certified grocery store in Fogelsville, Pa. in December. 

The 65,800-sq.-ft. superstore also is the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified location in the 162-store Weis Markets’ footprint. The Fogelsville location will feature a larger perishable department, including a produce department with a greater selection of organic produce, an in-store café where beer will be sold, and a full-service pharmacy.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets on Thursday announced it has begun the construction of an environmentally innovative 65,000-sq.-ft. superstore in Fogelsville, Pa.

When construction is completed, the store is expected to achieve U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification for measurably reducing or mitigating its environmental impact for sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, material selection and indoor environmental quality.

The Fogelsville unit will be Weis Markets’ first LEED-certified store.

Food Lion announced that two of its stores in Fayetteville, N.C., have earned LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion has opened its third store certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, in Hope Mills, N.C.

“By building our third LEED grocery store, we will reduce energy costs by more than 20% compared to a typical supermarket, as well as conserve 40% more water than other Food Lion stores,” said Kyle Mitchell, VP store development for Delhaize America South. “Food Lion has one of the most advanced retail energy conservation programs in the country.”

CINCINNATI — Procter & Gamble is working toward making its sites LEED-certified as part of the company's long-term sustainability commitment.

Established by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED is the nation's preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. All new P&G sites, including those in the United States, that currently are in the design phase or early construction are working toward achieving LEED certification, P&G said.
