Bi-Lo Holdings announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement with Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. to acquire 22 Piggly Wiggly stores with approximately 1,200 store employees in South Carolina and coastal Georgia.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Bi-Lo Holdings on Thursday announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement with Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co. to acquire 22 Piggly Wiggly stores with approximately 1,200 store employees in South Carolina and coastal Georgia.  

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

On the same day Bi-Lo Holdings acquired 22 Piggly Wiggly locations, Harris Teeter Supermarkets also acquired six Piggly Wiggly locations as well as one future location all in the Charleston, S.C., area.

MATTHEWS, N.C. — On the same day Bi-Lo Holdings acquired 22 Piggly Wiggly locations, Harris Teeter Supermarkets also acquired six Piggly Wiggly locations as well as one future location all in the Charleston, S.C., area. 

The transaction is expected to be completed in October 2013. Harris Teeter plans to close the acquired stores for three to four days for stocking and training of employees. The pharmacies at the acquired stores will remain open throughout the transition, the grocer announced.

Private investment firm Yucaipa Cos., which was founded by billionaire Ron Burkle, has announced that it plans to acquire Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market from U.K.-based Tesco PLC.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Private investment firm Yucaipa Cos., which was founded by billionaire Ron Burkle, has announced that it plans to acquire Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market from U.K.-based Tesco PLC.

Yucaipa's purchase is slated to be complete within three months. In the meantime, it is expected to be business as usual for most Fresh & Easy stores.

The retail industry added 43,600 jobs last month, particularly in general merchandise, electronics and clothing, according to an industry trade group.

WASHINGTON — The retail industry added 43,600 jobs last month, particularly in general merchandise, electronics and clothing, according to an industry trade group.

The numbers were based on calculations from the National Retail Federation, out of a total 169,000 jobs that the Bureau of Labor Statistics said the economy added in August, bringing the country's unemployment rate down to 7.3%.

Aztec was acquired from Aegis Media.

RB said Tuesday that it had teamed up with Save the Children to help prevent child deaths from diarrhea. Diarrhea is the second-leading cause of death in children younger than 5 years. This year, RB sponsored its biannual Global Challenge to raise money for a children's health product in Indonesia.

segment Tuesday afternoon on the hiring of Americans with disabilities. Walgreens employs approximately 1,000 persons with disabilities throughout its supply chain, or 10% of its supply chain workforce. Wasson wants to hit that mark across its retail workforce as well, Wasson said.

The SPCB said the due date applies to the first round of Certified Specialty Pharmacy tests, which will be administered in October, and pharmacists can apply online for the test.
