Hy-Vee has opened its latest store, in Sioux Falls, S.D., the grocery and retail pharmacy chain said.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Hy-Vee has opened its latest store in Sioux Falls, S.D., the grocery and retail pharmacy chain said.

Hy-Vee acquired the building, formerly a Sunshine Foods store, in September as part of the same transaction that included the opening of another Sioux Falls store and a store in Windom, Minn.

The 45,000-sq.-ft. store will employ 45 former employees of Sunshine Foods.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The nation’s top independent pharmacy group is hailing a recent decision by a major corporation to maintain freedom of choice of where its employees fill their maintenance prescription medicines.

The National Community Pharmacists Association today applauded BB&T's decision to reemphasize and continue its employees' choice in filling their maintenance prescriptions, including at independent community pharmacies. The revised policy was communicated to BB&T employees last week.

Supermarket chain Price Chopper will buy out an independent pharmacy in Malta, N.Y., according to media reports.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Supermarket chain Price Chopper will buy out an independent pharmacy in Malta, N.Y., according to media reports.

News media in upstate New York reported that Price Chopper would buy Apple Community Pharmacy and hire all of its 15 employees.

The supermarket chain will operate its pharmacy at the same location as Apple and offer the same programs and services it offers at its own stores, pending completion of the pharmacy at its store in Malta.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. — Par Pharmaceutical has started shipping a generic version of a hypertension drug, the company said Monday.

Par announced the shipment of amlodipine besylate and benazepril hydrochloride capsules in the 5-mg/320-mg and 10-mg/320-mg strengths. The drug is a generic version of Novartis’ Lotrel, which has annual sales of $361 million in the two strengths, according to IMS Health.

CVS Caremark is more than doubling the size of its Medicare Part D program by acquiring the Medicare Part D business of Universal American for roughly $1.25 billion.

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Caremark is more than doubling the size of its Medicare Part D program by acquiring the Medicare Part D business of Universal American for roughly $1.25 billion.

Universal American’s Part D business currently serves about 1.9 million Medicare PDP members, while CVS Caremark serves roughly 1.2 million Medicare PDP members. This reflects current levels of membership and does not include 2011 auto assignment or the results of the annual enrollment period, which ended Dec. 31, 2010.

SXC Health Solutions has completed its acquisition of independent specialty pharmacy provider MedfusionRx.

LISLE, Ill. — SXC Health Solutions announced Wednesday that it had completed its acquisition of independent specialty pharmacy provider MedfusionRx in a deal worth $100 million in cash, with an additional $5.5 million subject to the achievement of certain performance targets in fiscal year 2012.

The waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act expired Dec. 24.
