CARLISLE, Pa. — Ahold USA's supermarket banners have donated more than $4 million to charitable causes over the past week.

Last Friday, Giant Food Stores of Carlisle, Pa., also known as Giant-Carlisle, announced a $517,535 donation through its annual Support Our Troops campaign, which benefits regional USO chapters in the area where Giant has stores, including Pennsylvania, West Virginia and parts of Virginia and Maryland.

Stop & Shop, owned by Ahold USA, announced the introduction of the Stop & Shop Prescription Savings Card. The card is available for a one-time enrollment fee of $10 and offers 30-day supplies of certain generic drugs for $3.99 and 90-day supplies for $9.99, as well as additional savings on products and services like diabetes testing supplies and flu shots.

Giant, the Ahold USA-operated supermarket banner also known as Giant-Landover due to being based in Landover, Md., and to distinguish it from fellow Ahold chain Giant Food Stores of Carlisle, Pa., announced the launch of the Giant Prescription Savings Card, which offers discounts on branded and generic drugs and personalized savings on other health-related products.

CARLISLE, Pa. — A division of Ahold USA is donating millions of dollars to local schools.

Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets, also known as Giant-Carlisle, announced Wednesday the donation of $3 million to 2,868 public and private schools through its A+ School Rewards program for the 2012-2013 school year. The program has donated more than $16 million since 2005. The program allows local schools to earn money for technology, scholarships, school programs, field trips, playgrounds and other needs.

LANDOVER, Md. — Giant Food of Landover, Md., is planning to raise $1.6 million for children's cancer research, the supermarket chain said Tuesday.

The Ahold USA-owned banner, also known as Giant-Landover, announced it would launch its ninth annual Triple Winner game on Friday to benefit the Pediatric Oncology Division at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and The Children's Cancer Foundation. The annual game has helped raise $11.5 million to support pediatric cancer research since its inception in 2005.

Giant-Landover, officially Giant Food of Landover, Md., said president Anthony Hucker signed a statement of support for National Guard and reserve employees at the Brentwood Giant Food in Washington, accompanied by ESGR District of Columbia chairman George Alexander. Established in 1972, the ESGR develops and maintains employer support for the Guard and Reserve service.

Giant, also known as Giant-Landover to distinguish it from Giant Food Stores of Carlisle, Pa. — also owned by Ahold — said it would collect toys at all of its 170 stores during the holiday season.

Giant-Landover operates stores in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia.

LANDOVER, Md. — Giant-Landover donated 1,000 turkeys to a nearby food bank last week to help families in need enjoy Thanksgiving, the Ahold-owned chain said.

The chain, officially known as Giant Food and based in Landover, Md., sent President Anthony Hucker and VP Finance Brian Shelton to the Capital Area Food Bank to present 1,000 turkeys on Friday. Shelton is also a board member of the food bank.

LANDOVER, Md. — Giant-Landover has appointed Gayle Shields as its director of pharmacy operations, the Ahold USA-owned supermarket chain said Friday.

Shields brings nearly 25 years of pharmacy operations experience to the chain, officially known as Giant Food of Landover, Md., and a separate banner from Carlisle, Pa.-based Giant Food Stores, also owned by Ahold. Shields previously worked as director of pharmacy operations for Albertson's and Save Mart, and attended college and graduate school in South Africa.

LANDOVER, Md. — Supermarket chain Giant Food has acquired two supermarkets in the Baltimore area from another company, Giant said.

Giant, also known as Giant-Landover to distinguish itself from Giant Food Stores of Carlisle, Pa. — both are owned by Netherlands-based Royal Ahold — said it would buy two Fresh & Green's stores from Mrs. Green's Management. The stores are in Baltimore and Parkville, Md.

Both stores will subsequently be closed for remodeling, and the Baltimore store will replace a Giant store at a nearby shopping center.

About 70% of Connecticut residents who qualify for SNAP, formerly known as the food stamp program, actually receive the benefit, Stop & Shop said. This is because of such issues as language barriers, lack of transportation or lack of knowledge of the program.

One supermarket operator is literally driving customers to its pharmacies.

Customers at Royal Ahold’s Giant-Landover stores can earn one Gas Rewards point for every dollar spent on purchases in Giant pharmacies in Maryland, most of Virginia, Delaware and Washington, D.C. With the program, for example, a $20 pharmaceutical co-pay earns 20 points and a $50 pharmacy purchase earns 50 points. For every 100 Gas Rewards points earned, shoppers save 10 cents off every gallon of gas bought at Giant and participating Shell gas stations.
