LONDON — New research on a rare genetic disorder in which the pancreas fails to grow could shed light on how the organ develops and lead to treatments for Type 1 diabetes.

In a study published in the journal Nature Genetics, an international team of researchers led by scientists at England's University of Exeter discovered a genetic mutation present in 15-in-27 people with a condition called pancreatic agenesis, finding a key role for the gene, GATA6, in the development of pacreatic cells.

The next contender for the title is France's Sanofi, which EvaluatePharma said was expected to take the top spot next year and stay there through 2016.

LONDON and ROTTERDAM, Netherlands — Unilever has inked a definitive agreement to sell one of its divisions for $325 million in cash.

Unilever said it plans to sell its Culver Specialty Brands division — which houses such brands as Mrs. Dash, Molly McButter, Bakers Joy, Sugar Twin and Static Guard, which are sold in the United States and Canada — to B&G Foods. The division, which garnered $90 million in revenue for Unilever for the 12 months ended in September, became part of the company after Unilever's acquisition of Alberto-Culver.

LONDON — Unilever has agreed to acquire Russian beauty company Concern Kalina, which significantly will strengthen its foothold in skin care and hair care in Russia.

Unilever initially is acquiring 82% of Concern Kalina for approximately €390 million ($537 million). The acquisition, which is subject to regulatory approvals, is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.

GSK announced that it would donate $1 million worth of Cervarix (human papillomavirus bivalent [types 16 and 18] vaccine, recombinant) to the Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon Partnership over the next five years, as well as $50,000 to support the program operations. The partnership is an initiative led by Susan G. Komen for the Cure, UNAIDS, the President's Emergency Relief Plan for AIDS Relief and the George W. Bush Institute.

Terms were not disclosed.

Outside the United States and Puerto Rico, the Alberto VO5 brand will remain in Unilever’s portfolio.

LONDON — British retailer Tesco will launch its loyalty card program in the United States, according to published reports.

Tesco reportedly is launching the program in an effort to make a profit on its Fresh & Easy stores on the West Coast. The stores, which opened in 2007, have had difficulty turning a profit. The company now operates 175 stores, but has continued losing money.

The new card will allow customers to win points when they use it, much like loyalty cards it offers in the United Kingdom and other markets.

With the acquisition, Unilever becomes the world's leading company in hair conditioning, the second largest in shampoo and the third largest in styling. Alberto Culver generated annual sales in excess $1.6 billion in fiscal year 2010.
