NEW YORK — The Estée Lauder Cos. has appointed former L’Oréal USA executive Pamela Gill Alabaster to lead the its global corporate responsibility function.

Alabaster will report to Gregory Polcer, EVP global supply chain and Peter Jueptner, SVP strategy and new business development, co-chairs of the company’s corporate responsibility efforts, under the leadership of executive chairman, William P. Lauder.

The do-it-yourself beauty trend continues to blossom as the at-home beauty devices market enjoyed robust double-digit growth globally during 2012, according research by Kline & Co.

According to Kline's "Beauty Devices: Global Market Analysis and Opportunities" report, the at-home beauty devices market grew nearly 22% in 2012, with underdeveloped markets and skin care needs, such as anti-aging and cellulite/body toning, yet to be fully addressed. In light of this, Kline stated that the market's potential is still being realized.

Beauty company L’Oréal reported that during the first half of 2013, North America achieved growth of 5.4% on a like-for-like basis and 6.7% based on reported figures.

PARIS — Beauty company L’Oréal reported that during the first half of 2013, North America achieved growth of 5.4% on a like-for-like basis and 6.7% based on reported figures.

In North America, the Consumer Products division is making strategic breakthroughs with L'Oréal Paris Advanced Hair care, Olia hair colorant by Garnier and the ramp-up of Essie, the company stated.

At L'Oréal Luxe, Urban Decay and Kiehl's are expanding strongly, and the new men's fragrance Red by Ralph Lauren is making a good start.

NEW YORK — L'Oréal USA president and CEO Frederic Roze announced on Monday that Kristina Schake will be joining L'Oréal USA as chief communications officer, effective July 8.  

Schake will represent L'Oréal USA for all corporate communications and will lead the external communications strategy in the areas of public and media relations, industry and government relations, sustainability and crisis communications. In addition, Schake will oversee the company's corporate philanthropic programs.

Beauty mavens are loving their beauty devices. As untapped potential exists in Asian and European beauty devices markets, the United States has retained its global market share lead with strong double-digit growth in 2012, according to recent research.

Consulting and research firm Kline Group stated earlier this year that the U.S. beauty device market grew nearly 20% in 2012, driven by both new product launches from existing marketers and new players.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Swiss skin drug maker Galderma Pharma will acquire another Swiss drug maker also focused on treatments for skin conditions, Galderma said.

Based in Egerkingen, Switzerland, Spirig makes treatments for such conditions as solar damage and skin barrier function impairment, as well as treatments for such precancerous conditions as actinic keratosis. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, though it was noted that Spirig had sales of about $106 million in 2011. The global corporate headquarters of Galderma will remain in Lausanne, Switzerland.

L’Oréal has signed an agreement with Castanea Partners to acquire the fashion-forward, edgy beauty brand Urban Decay.

NEWTON, Mass. — L’Oréal has signed an agreement with Castanea Partners to acquire the fashion-forward, edgy beauty brand Urban Decay.

Terms of the deal, which is expected to close by the end of the year, were not disclosed. In the fiscal year ended in June 2012, Urban Decay, which is sold in such beauty retailers as Ulta and Sephora, recorded net sales of $130 million.

In the United States, Urban Decay will report to Carol Hamilton, president of L'Oréal Luxe USA.
