BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Sam's Club has hired cookbook author Katie Workman to recommend simple and healthy foods to influence people to eat better, the club retailer said Monday.

Workman is the author of "The Mom 100 Cookbook," and the retailer has hired her to join its Sam's Club Simply Delicious Chef Brigade and give people healthy recipes and encourage them to add fish and vegetables to their diets.

WILTON, Conn. — Skin care company Beiersdorf has announced a consumer awareness and fundraising initiative to support National Mentoring Month.

Beiersdorf currently has an employee-led, work-based mentoring program focused on supporting youth in the local community. In recognition of National Mentoring Month, the company, in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters, has created a three-month consumer awareness and fundraising initiative that will raise $100,000 to make a big difference for the Big Brothers Big Sisters network.

NEW YORK — New York’s hip and edgy beauty retailer Ricky’s NYC has tapped Catherine Moellering, former EVP at the retail consultancy Tobe Report, to serve as its new president and CEO, according to a published report.

According to a Crain’s report, Moellering joined Ricky's in order to better position the brick-and-mortar business for the digital revolution.

 WASHINGTON — As many as 68% of American adults take nutritional or dietary supplements, according to an annual consumer survey conducted on behalf of the Council for Responsible Nutrition. Regular supplement usage also remains steady. The online survey found that more than three-quarters of supplement users (76%) classify themselves as “regular” users, as opposed to occasional users (18%) or seasonal users (6%).

WASHINGTON — The Council for Responsible Nutrition on Thursday announced it will serve as a promotional partner for the one-day scientific symposium "Vitamin D: Beyond Bone," presented by the New York Academy of Sciences, The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science and the Abbott Nutrition Health Institute. 

The keynote speaker will be Daniel Bikle, professor of medicine and dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco, and co-director of the Special Diagnostic and Treatment Unit of the San Francisco VA Medical Center.

CHICAGO — SymphonyIRI Group on Wednesday announced that Andrew Appel has joined the company as president and CEO.

Appel, who also joins SymphonyIRI’s board of directors, succeeds John Freeland, who moves into a new interim role as executive vice chairman and will remain on the board of directors until his retirement later in 2012.

Earth Day is April 22. So it's as good a time as any to look at one aspect of community pharmacy that gets far less attention than such issues as managed care reimbursements or medication therapy management, but nonetheless is a key service provided by some pharmacists and a benefit to communities and the environment.
