HAIFA, Israel — The makers of a new app say that it increased users' medication adherence rate to more than 80%.

The MediSafe Project said Tuesday that users reported medication adherence rates of 81%, while the rate was 84.25% for patients using statins.

AIRPORT CITY, Israel — SodaStream has launched a new line of flavors sweetened with an all-natural plant-based sweetener.

SodaStream said its stevia-laden flavors initially will launch in Europe, with U.S. sales expected to begin this summer. The initial flavors, with less than five calories per serving, include pink grapefruit, peach-pear, orange, lemon-lime, cranberry-apple and others.

HAIFA BAY, Israel — A committee formed by Taro Pharmaceutical Industries in December is continuing to evaluate an acquisition offer by India-based Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, Taro said.

Sun is hoping to acquire Israel-based Taro for $24.50 per share.

The committee, comprising members of the company's board of directors, has brought on Citigroup Global Markets as its financial adviser and is receiving legal advice from Israeli legal firm Goldfarb Seligman & Co. and U.S. firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher.

HAIFA BAY, Israel — Israel's Taro Pharmaceutical Industries has formed a special committee to review an offer by India's Sun Pharmaceutical Industries for all of the shares of Taro that it doesn't already own, Taro said.

Sun offered Taro $24.50 per share on Oct. 18. Sun has sought to acquire Taro since 2008.

Taro reported a 14.2% increase in sales in second quarter 2011 over second quarter 2010, while profits increased by $19.3 million during the same period.

HERZLIYA, Israel — The Food and Drug Administration has given orphan drug designation to an investigational treatment for multiple myeloma, a blood cell cancer, that soon will enter mid-stage development.

XTL announced that the FDA had granted the designation to its recombinant human erythropoietin, or rHuEPO drug, for which the company soon will start phase-2 clinical trials.

The FDA gives orphan drug designation to treatments for diseases that affect fewer than 200,000 people in the United States per year.

KARMIEL, Israel — The Food and Drug Administration has declined to approve a biologic treatment for a rare genetic disorder by Israeli drug maker Protalix Biotherapeutics, Protalix said Friday.

The company said the FDA issued a complete response letter for its application for taliglucerase alfa, a treatment for Gaucher disease. The FDA issues a CRL when it has finished reviewing a regulatory application, but questions remain that preclude final approval.
