DUBLIN — Shire will pay $4.2 billion to buy a drug maker specializing in treatments for rare diseases.

Shire, headquartered in Ireland, said the $50-per-share acquisition of ViroPharma would strengthen its rare disease portfolio. Exton, Pa.-based ViroPharma's products include the hereditary angioedema drug Cinryze (C1 esterase inhibitor [human]) and Vancocin (vancomycin hydrochloride), used to treat Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.

NEW YORK — Teva Pharmaceutical Industries and Mylan have launched generic versions of Pfizer's Viagra in nearly a dozen European countries, the two companies said.

Teva, based in Jerusalem, announced the launch of generic sildenafil tablets in Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Ireland, Austria, Belgium and Denmark. The company already markets generic versions of the erectile dysfunction drug in Spain and Canada.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug that it called the first single-pill combination treatment for Type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol.

The FDA approved Merck's Juvisync (sitagliptin and simvastatin), manufactured by Merck subsidiary MSD International GmbH Clonmel Co., based in Tipperary, Ireland. Merck operates under the name MSD outside the United States and Canada in order to avoid confusion with Germany-based Merck KGaA.

CHICAGO — Research firm Mintel hosted its New Products and Consumer Insights Pavilion in New Orleans last week and highlighted the importance of portion size, noting that many consumer packaged goods companies ignore the nutrition guideline.

During the event, more than 600 attendees voted on their favorite portion-control items. Top products were Sensible Portions veggie snacks variety pack from Canada, followed by Emerald Nut and Granola Mix in the United States, and Krave Chocolate Hazelnut Cereal from Ireland, which captured second and third place, respectively.

CORK, Ireland — A subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson and Gilead Sciences will collaborate to develop a combination drug for HIV, the two companies said Tuesday.

Gilead and Tibotec Pharmaceuticals will work to create a once-daily, single-tablet combination of Tibotec’s Prezista (darunavir) and Gilead’s investigational drug cobicistat, a so-called boosting agent.

WALTHAM, Mass. — Alkermes will buy Irish drug maker Elan’s drug formulation and manufacturing business for $960 million, the two companies said Monday.

Alkermes will buy Elan Drug Technologies and incorporate the combined company in Ireland, naming it Alkermes PLC. Alkermes said the acquisition would give it an edge in treating central nervous system disorders and expected to have diverse revenue streams from 25 commercialized drugs.

ARDEE, Ireland The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new contraceptive from Warner Chilcott, the drug maker said Friday.

 

The company said it plans to launch Lo Loestrin Fe (norethindrone acetate and ethinyl estradiol tablets, ethinyl estradiol tablets and ferrous fumarate tablets) early next year. The company said the contraceptive contains the lowest dosage of estrogen — 10 micrograms — of any oral contraceptive currently available in the U.S. market.

ARDEE, Ireland The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new formulation of a drug for osteoporosis made by Warner Chilcott, the drug maker said Monday.

 

Warner Chilcott announced the approval of Atelvia (risendronate sodium), a treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis, which it plans to launch early next year. The drug is a delayed-release formulation of Actonel.

ARDEE, Ireland Drug maker Warner Chilcott will buy the U.S. rights to a treatment for overactive bladder for $400 million, the company said Friday.

 

The drug maker announced that it would terminate its co-promotion agreement with Novartis concerning the drug Enablex (darifenacin) and purchase the rights to sell it in the United States. It may be required to make additional milestone payments of up to $20 million to Novartis.
