This year's World Diabetes Day theme is diabetes education and prevention, and this year's slogan is "Let's Take Control of Diabetes. Now." The campaign highlights diabetes symptoms and prevention measures, the American Diabetes Association said.

CLEVELAND The CEO of drug maker Eli Lilly has called for a “wave of invention” to combat diabetes.

Speaking at the Cleveland Clinic Medical Innovation Summit, John Lechleiter said breakthroughs against the disease are needed as urgently today as a century ago, noting that the disease could create a “health and economic time bomb,” as 1-in-3 Americans are forecasted to have the disease by 2050.

The company announced the appointment of Brahim Zabeli as VP diabetes care for the U.S. market. In the new role, Zabeli will manage commercial activity, including sales, marketing and customer service.

 

 

Zabeli previously worked as director of trade and managed markets for medical supply company Becton, Dickinson & Co.

JERUSALEM Oramed Pharmaceuticals has seen promising results from a clinical trial of an oral insulin for diabetes, the Israeli drug maker said.

 

The company said its exploratory clinical trial of the oral insulin capsule ORMD-0801 was successful. The company is developing the capsule as a treatment for patients with uncontrolled Type 1 diabetes. The company also is developing the oral insulin as a treatment for Type 2 diabetes.

NEW YORK Those with Type 2 diabetes may be at greater risk of developing the brain plaques associated with Alzheimer’s disease, new research suggested.

According to a Japanese study, which appeared in the Aug. 25 online issue of the journal Neurology, those individuals with the highest levels of insulin resistance had nearly six times the odds of developing plaque deposits between the nerves in the brain, after adjusting for other risk factors, compared with those with the lowest levels of fasting insulin.
