NEW YORK With an eye to the future, Novartis brass envisions a growth arena driven by the aging Boomer population — eye care, along with all of the products, medicines and surgeries associated with eye care.

NEW YORK The Rite Aid weight-loss program is probably one of the better examples of how to tie in just about every component of a modern-day drug store — pharmacy, front-end (in this case, over the counter) and in-store clinics — with the extensive health knowledge of both the pharmacist behind the bench and the practitioner at the clinic.

NEW YORK If there was any doubt as to the value CVS Caremark places on personalized medicine, that doubt no longer should exist.

Clearly, the company believes that one area its PBM can create real value for payers is within pharmacogenomics or personalized medicine. Not only has CVS Caremark tapped Per Lofberg, co-founder of genetic benefit management company Generation Health, to serve as the PBM president, but it also has upped its stake in Generation Health.

NEW YORK What do diabetes supplies for retail pharmacy Medicare patients, the Pittsburgh Steelers' chance of defending their Super Bowl title and Old Father Time 2009 all have in common? They all could be no more not too long after Dick Clark counts down to the New Year for the 38th time.

And of those three, losing diabetes supplies for retail pharmacy Medicare patients will certainly be the most devastating. (Unless you live in Steel Town. And you don’t have diabetes.)

NEW YORK The mid-December plea by 16 members of Congress to assure a fair payment for pharmacies that dispense generic drugs to Medicaid patients was welcome news. But with the movement to pass a health-reform bill reaching a crescendo in the Senate, the flawed Medicaid pharmacy reimbursement system still is a hot potato that too few lawmakers seem willing or able to touch.

More aptly, it’s a political football that keeps getting tossed around the House and Senate health-reform debate.

NEW YORK This is further substantiation that the business of over-the-counter medicines, particularly those sold in the U.S. market, is a key growth driver for pharma companies. If you weren’t convinced when Pfizer re-entered the OTC market with its acquisition of Wyeth, then you certainly should be convinced now.

NEW YORK Among teens, meth abuse is down and dextromethorphan abuse is not on the rise. That suggests that efforts to curb teen drug abuse, no matter what the abused drug may be, is making some headway. But that also suggests there’s still a significant need to continue raising awareness around the dangers associated with abuse.

NEW YORK Consumers can be expected to self-identify a cough, and even locate a cough remedy in the nonprescription aisles. But consumers cannot be expected to distinguish between dextromethorphan and guaifenesin necessarily. Both are indicated for cough relief, but work in entirely different ways. For that you need a readily accessible healthcare professional, such as the pharmacist or nurse practitioner.

NEW YORK A small group of U.S. representatives from both parties has asked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for changes in health-reform legislation that would boost payment rates to hard-pressed pharmacies when dispensing generic drugs to Medicaid patients.

NEW YORK Rumors that Ukrop’s was on the sales block seems to finally have come to fruition. And with Ahold being the acquisition partner, this may mark a resurgence of Ukrop’s, known for its close community ties, in its core Virginia markets.

NEW YORK While many companies are extending their brands into the social media arena, bringing an interactive brand experience to consumers at home, other companies are working toward extending that brand experience at the actual shelf, through such new mediums as smartphones. Evincii is one of those companies.

While Evincii declined to disclose future roll-outs around the PICKKA platform, this new app may be a glimpse into the future of merchandising, and at the very least the future of point-of-purchase material.

NEW YORK If there’s a huckster swindling supplements as the latest cure-all, turns out it’s not a supplement they’re swindling after all. If not an illicit pharmaceutical outright, it’s at the very least a mismarketed snake oil, and this band of supplement associations is helping to stamp those hucksters out.

NEW YORK GlaxoSmithKline’s “Nicorette makes quitting suck less” campaign is a smart play that ought to continue a resurgence in sales of smoking cessation products.

For the 52 weeks ended Oct. 31, sales of nonprescription stop-smoking products were up slightly by 4.3% to $758 million across food, drug and mass (including Walmart) outlets, citing Nielsen Group data. But compare that with two years ago, where for the 52 weeks ended Nov. 3, 2007 sales were as high as $778.6 million, and category sales are still down 2.6%.

NEW YORK To paraphrase a quote often attributed — but probably incorrectly — to 19th century German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, if you like either laws or sausages, it’s best not to watch them being made.

That maxim could certainly apply to the seemingly endless bickering over the details of the health-reform debate in Congress. But in an era of constant Internet news feeds, blogging and instantaneous, on-the-spot reporting and analysis, it’s virtually impossible to avoid the spectacle.

NEW YORK Convenience and value. That’s what community pharmacy and their retail clinic partners deliver to their patients. And that’s what the Department of Defense is counting on in covering immunizations at local pharmacies and identifying convenient care clinics as network providers — two separate pieces of news issued within the past month that really underscore the importance of pharmacies and retail clinics in the delivery of health care today.

NEW YORK Switch (and more recently the economy) drives sales of over-the-counter medicines. And sales are looking good for years to come.

Though, to be honest, the down economy was somewhat of a double-edged sword for purveyors of branded OTC medicines. Sure, more people elected to seek remedies in the nonprescription aisle before paying for a doctor’s visit, but they also walked out of those aisles with more private label products in their baskets. That’s great news for drug retailers but of concern to OTC manufacturers.

NEW YORK Ignorance is not always bliss. For as much such associations as the Natural Products Association and the Council for Responsible Nutrition assert that the dietary supplement business is in fact regulated, there still are a host of organizations that ought to know better, suggesting it isn’t.

If “Supplement Safety Now” is successful, it stands to increase the cost of doing business for retailers and supplement suppliers without making one dent into the illicit business of steroids.

NEW YORK A near doubling in the diabetes population and near tripling in costs of treating the disease threatens to create a huge drag on the healthcare system and the economy as a whole, but retail pharmacies have the opportunity to help bring some of those costs down.

A study commissioned by Danish drug maker Novo Nordisk forecasts that by 2034, the American diabetes population will be 44.1 million, while spending on the disease will total $336 billion.

NEW YORK The digestives aisle will be altogether crowded come early 2010, especially with two new proton-pump inhibitors on the shelf. And while there may be some question as to just how large sales of antacids can get, one thing is for sure: There will be a slew of advertisers vying for their own increased share of stomach.

NEW YORK The fact that Roche has enhanced its capabilities across its iPhone app platform really only means one thing: Roche has dialed into a new way to reach its users, and it’s a way that is very rapidly growing in market share.

And what should be really telling about all of this iPhone action — it’s all opt-in, meaning consumers are actively interested in engaging with the manufacturers of their healthcare products in an effort to better manage their health.

Pharmacogenomics in Aisle 1?...

NEW YORK Pharmacogenomics in Aisle 1?

Not quite, but the continued evolution of Kerr’s Community Healthcare Center store concept certainly offers a glimpse into what role community pharmacy could play in the American healthcare system of the future — and it goes far beyond just MTM. Like the deal CVS Caremark announced last week with Generation Health, pharmacogenomics, the study of how genetics influence drug response, represents the new frontier of community pharmacy.
