Steve Anderson recalled during Sunday morning’s State of the Association address how when he started as the president and CEO of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores five years ago, people were interested to see what his eyes would discover at NACDS and within community pharmacy that might help make a difference for the future. Anderson said that today he answers that question in the same way he did back then: “Every day my eyes see something fresh in what you do — in the innovative offerings of community pharmacy.”

NEW YORK — Ken Finnegan, Walgreens divisional VP healthcare new business development, will assume leadership of the corporate innovation team, Drug Store News has learned.

Finnegan succeeds Colin Watts, corporate VP and chief innovation officer, who is departing Walgreens for Weight Watchers in January. In that capacity, Finnegan will pick up on Watts' efforts to transform the retail pharmacy retail format into more of a destination center for all issues regarding health and wellness.

DALLAS — Kimberly-Clark is expanding its worldwide innovation capabilities with the establishment of a global innovation center that will be based in Bogota, Colombia.

The facility, which is the first of its kind in the region, will develop products using local and regional insights to meet broader consumer needs, Kimberly-Clark said. CHICAGO — U.S. consumers that opted to become more thrifty during the recession will face rising food costs with ease as they've mastered ways to stretch their money, according to new research by NPD.

The research group's Economy Tracker found that nearly 3-out-of-4 consumers (74%) strongly agreed that they expect coupons and special deals will be much more important in deciding what to buy, while 67% said that they would shop less in general and 53% said that they would be buying in bulk.

Speaking at The Economist magazine’s 2011 Pharma Summit, Eli Lilly chairman, president and CEO John Lechleiter called for a new approach to research in such illnesses as Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and cancer. This included changing the way companies conduct research and public policies that promote an environment in which innovation can flourish.
