The number of new independent pharmacies and new prescriptions filled with independents were down in 2010, though the number of refilled prescriptions continued to grow slightly, according to the latest 2011 NCPA Digest, sponsored by Cardinal Health, released Monday by the National Community Pharmacists Association.

The National Community Pharmacists Association on Monday launched Simplify My Meds, an innovative adherence program that provides pharmacists with the tools to help coordinate patients’ prescription refills to a single day of the month, for its independent community pharmacy members.

The new model facilitates a more comprehensive and coordinated level of pharmacy care, reduces the potential for gaps in therapy and promotes improved medication adherence, the NCPA stated.

The “Today Show” special program “Lend a Hand” will get a hand from one of the country’s largest independent pharmacy networks.

VALLEY FORGE, Pa. — The “Today Show” special program “Lend a Hand” will get a hand from one of the country’s largest independent pharmacy networks.

Good Neighbor Pharmacy is supporting the program, which started Monday and continues through Friday. During the program, weatherman Al Roker will travel to Anchorage, Alaska; Houston; Birmingham, Ala.; and Charleston, W.Va., to help local charities.

To that end, its most recent radio and television campaign positioned the pharmacies against the large national chains. The customer-
service-focused campaign established the Sav-Mor pharmacist as “your personal pharmacist” along with the idea that “nobody cares more for the customer than the owner.”
