Drug maker Eli Lilly and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation will fund research to find ways to regenerate insulin-producing cells in patients with Type 1 diabetes.

INDIANAPOLIS — Drug maker Eli Lilly and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation will fund research to find ways to regenerate insulin-producing cells in patients with Type 1 diabetes.

The two announced Thursday that ideas included finding ways to grow new insulin-producing cells within a person’s body. Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes, is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks beta cells, the cells that allow the body to produce insulin. As many as 3 million people in the United States have Type 1 diabetes.

INDIANAPOLIS — John Johnson is bidding Eli Lilly adieu.

Johnson, who served as SVP and president of the drug maker's oncology business — whose portfolio includes Alimta (pemetrexed) and Gemzar (gemcitabine hydrochloride) — resigned, effective Jan. 28. Johnson is taking on the chief executive role at specialty biopharmaceutical company Savient, effective Jan. 31. Savient is best known for its chronic gout treatment Krystexxa (pegloticase), which received regulatory approval in September 2010.

INDIANAPOLIS — An advisory committee of the Food and Drug Administration voted last week not to recommend approval of a drug from Eli Lilly.

The FDA Gastrointestinal Drugs Advisory Committee said it recommended that additional studies be conducted prior to the FDA's review of liprotamase, a nonporcine pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy, for the treatment of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. EPI is a disease resulting from cystic fibrosis, removal of the pancreas, chronic pancreatitis and other conditions.

U.S. drug maker Eli Lilly and German drug maker Boehringer Ingelheim will collaborate to develop drugs for diabetes, the companies said Tuesday.

INDIANAPOLIS — U.S. drug maker Eli Lilly and German drug maker Boehringer Ingelheim will collaborate to develop drugs for diabetes, the companies said Tuesday.

The agreement centers around investigative drugs currently in mid- to late-stage clinical development, including two oral drugs made by BI, BI10773 and linagliptin, and two basal insulin analogues made by Lilly, LY2605541 and LY2963016. The deal also includes options to develop and commercialize a Lilly monoclonal antibody.

INDIANAPOLIS — Eli Lilly is suspending a late-stage clinical trial of a cancer drug amid safety concerns, the drug maker said Monday.

The company had been conducting a phase-3 trial of the pharmaceutical drug tasisulam as a second-line treatment for patients with melanoma whose cancer could not be removed or had spread to other parts of the body. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is diagnosed in 68,000 people in the Untied States every year, according to the American Cancer Society.

INDIANAPOLIS — Eli Lilly and Australian drug maker Acrux have received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for a testosterone replacement therapy for men, the two companies announced Tuesday.

The FDA approved Axiron (testosterone) topical solution as a treatment for men with various conditions that lead to deficiency of the hormone. The drug, a controlled substance, is designed for application under the arm.

INDIANAPOLIS — The U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware has upheld a patent held by Indianapolis-based drug maker Eli Lilly covering a chemotherapy drug, Lilly said Monday.

 

The case concerns a patent covering Alimta (pemetrexed) that expires in July 2016 and generic drug maker Teva Pharmaceutical Industries’ challenge to it.

INDIANAPOLIS The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new usage for a drug used to treat depression and pain.

Eli Lilly said Thursday that the FDA had approved Cymbalta (duloxetine hydrochloride) for treating chronic musculoskeletal pain. This is the fifth indication for which the agency has approved Cymbalta, after major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, diabetic peripheral neuropathic pain and fibromyalgia, Lilly said.

INDIANAPOLIS The Food and Drug Administration declined to approve a long-anticipated diabetes drug made by Eli Lilly and two other companies, the companies said Tuesday.

Lilly, Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Alkermes said the FDA issued them a complete response letter for their application for Bydureon (exenatide), a once-weekly version of the Type 2 diabetes drug Byetta. A complete response letter means that the FDA has completed review of a regulatory application, but issues remain that preclude approval.

INDIANAPOLIS The U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey has ruled against drug maker Eli Lilly in its patent infringement case against generic drug maker Actavis regarding a drug used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Lilly said.

 

The court ruled that a method-of-use patent covering the drug, Strattera (atomoxetine), was invalid. The patent was set to expire in May 2017.
