WASHINGTON A small study conducted by Canadian researchers found factors that may link Type 2 diabetes with such cognitive impairments as dementia.

Older adults with diabetes who also have high blood pressure, walk slowly or lose their balance, or believe they’re in bad health, are more likely to have poorer cognitive functions than those without these problems, according to a new study conducted by researchers at the University of Alberta in Canada and published in the September issue of Neuropsychology

SAN DIEGO Improving medication adherence will require bringing multiple methods together in order to be successful, Pharmacy Quality Alliance senior director for research and performance measurement David Nau said Tuesday in an education session at the National Association of Chain Drug Stores’ Pharmacy and Technology Conference in San Diego.

 

“You need to have a multifaceted strategy around adherence if you want to have an impact on adherence,” Nau said.

EAST HANOVER, N.J. The Food and Drug Administration has approved a single-pill combination of two drugs made by Novartis for treating high blood pressure, the Swiss drug maker said Friday.

 

The FDA approved Tekamlo (aliskiren and amlodipine besylate) tablets, which combine Tekturna (aliskiren) with amlodipine, a channel blocker available as a generic. The drug is approved for treating patients who are likely to need multiple drugs to lower their blood pressure or as a replacement for patients who can’t control it using one of the drugs alone.

PITTSBURGH Mylan subsidiary Mylan Technologies has received final approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its hypertension treatment, the generic drug maker said.

Mylan said its clonidine transdermal system USP was approved in the 0.1 mg/day, 0.2 mg/day and 0.3 mg/day strengths. Mylan's CTS is the generic version of Boehringer Ingelheim's Catapres-TTS.
