LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Generic drug maker Hospira will have its investor conference next week, the company said Tuesday.

The drug maker, based in the Chicago area, will have the investor day at its headquarters on Dec. 5. Hospira specializes in manufacturing injectable generic drugs, including biosimilars for the European market.

The event will include slide presentations, and the company will stream it via audio webcast at its investors website, hospirainvestor.com.

DALLAS — The global market for biosimilars is expected to be worth nearly $2 billion before the end of the decade, according to a new study.

MarketsandMarkets, a Dallas-based research company, looked at the global market for biosimilars - knock-off versions of biotech drugs - including monoclonal antibodies, erythropoietins, recombinant proteins and peptides, forecasting $1.954 billion in market value by 2018.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Hospira had sales of $1 billion in third quarter 2013, the generic drug maker said.

Hospira, which specializes in making generic injectable drugs, as well as biosimilars for the European market, said the sales figures for the quarter were a 1.4% increase over the $994 million in sales reported in third quarter 2012. Profits for the quarter were $84.5 billion, compared with $78.4 billion during the same period last year.

LONDON — The global market for biosimilars will be worth nearly $2.5 billion this year, according to a new study.

The study, by British market research firm Visiongain, forecast that the $2.445 billion market size marked more than 20% of growth from 2012 and would account for about 2% of the overall market for biologics. The market is expected to grow rapidly through 2023 as biosimilars hit the market in the United States and European Union.

CHICAGO — Generic drug maker Hospira marked its fifth year marketing knock-off versions of biotech drugs in Europe Wednesday as it presented at the 2013 Biotechnology Industry Organization International Convention this week.

The drug maker said it delivered more than 5 million doses of biosimilar medicines to patients in Europe and Australia. The convention includes multiple sessions devoted to such topics as biosimilar regulatory approval, manufacturing and market formation, the company said.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Generic drug maker Hospira has appointed Matt Stober as its SVP operations, the company said.

Stober, who began working for Hospira in 2011 as corporate VP U.S. pharmacy operations, will have expanded leadership over all the company's drug manufacturing, as well as manufacturing science and technology, engineering, competitive strategy, health and safety, supply chain and procurement. Stober succeeds John Elliot, who has led operations since April 2012 and will provide continuity of support until he retires at the end of the year.
