Fred's Super Dollar on Thursday posted sales of $495.1 million for the fourth quarter ended Feb. 1, representing an increase of 0.5% on an adjusted basis (fiscal 2012 fourth quarter was 14 weeks vs. 13 weeks in fiscal 2013).

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred's Super Dollar on Thursday posted sales of $495.1 million for the fourth quarter ended Feb. 1, representing an increase of 0.5% on an adjusted basis (fiscal 2012 fourth quarter was 14 weeks vs. 13 weeks in fiscal 2013). Total sales for fiscal 2013 totaled $1.9 billion, representing a 1.4% on an adjusted basis.

Fred's Super Dollar on Thursday posted $157.5 million in sales, representing a decline of 1%, for the four weeks ended March 1.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred's Super Dollar on Thursday posted $157.5 million in sales, representing a decline of 1%, for the four weeks ended March 1. Comparable store sales for the month decreased 2.2% compared with a decrease of 1.5% in the prior-year period.

“In the pharmacy department, we will continue to accelerate new pharmacy acquisitions and focus on our plan for EIRIS Health Services, Fred's specialty pharmacy unit, which is experiencing solid script and sales growth in this fast-expanding segment of the pharmacy industry," noted Bruce Efird, Fred's CEO.

Shopko is opening two small-format stores in the Midwest, the chain said Thursday.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Shopko is opening two small-format stores in the Midwest, the chain said Thursday.

The company said it would open Shopko Hometown stores in Mayville, Wis., and Valentine, Neb., in spring 2014. The Shopko Hometown format is designed to serve smaller communities than the chain's larger store model and combines retail health services with an assortment of general merchandise, consumables and others.

A philanthropic arm of mass merchandiser Shopko is planning to donate up to $360,000 to school districts across the country.

NEW YORK — A philanthropic arm of mass merchandiser Shopko is planning to donate up to $360,000 to school districts across the country.

The Shopko Hometown Foundation, part of the Shopko Hometown division, which runs 181 small-format stores across the country, said it would donate $1 for each signature it receives from customers, for up to $2,000 per store.

The campaign, called Help Us Give Back, lasts through Dec. 24. Customers can sign their names once per day, every day through the campaign.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Shopko is opening five new small-format stores this month, the mass merchandise retailer said Monday.

The retailer opened the doors Monday to three Shopko Hometown stores in Ellsworth, Wis.; St. Peter, Minn.; and Winneconne, Wis. Two more openings are planned on Nov. 11 for Afton, Wyo., and Tomahawk, Wis. Shopko operates 330 stores in the Midwest, North Central, Mountain West and Pacific Northwest regions, including — with the five new locations — 180 Shopko Hometown stores.

"[We] were pleased with the progress of the first phase of our reconfiguration plan as the penetration of stores with pharmacies increased from 50% to 52%, and we experienced strong comparable sales performance in our expanded Hometown Auto & Hardware departments," Fred's CEO Bruce Efird stated.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Shopko will open five small-format stores in Minnesota and Wisconsin, the mass merchandise retailer said.

The five Shopko Hometown stores will be in Afton, Wyo., St. Peter, Minn., and Winneconne, Ellsworth and Tomahawk, Wis. The stores are expected to open in late fall. The Shopko Hometown format is designed to serve smaller, rural communities and augment the chain's larger stores and will total 181 out of the chain's more than 330 total stores once the new stores are completed.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Shopko has finished converting the 163 Pamida stores that it bought last year, the mass merchandise retail chain said Thursday.

Green Bay, Wis.-based Shopko announced plans to buy Omaha, Neb.-based Pamida in January 2012, with plans to convert Pamida stores to the Shopko Hometown format. The last 36 Pamida stores to be converted have marked their grand openings as Shopko Hometown stores.

The combined entity will retain the Shopko name. Shopko will be headquartered in Green Bay and Pamida’s corporate headquarters in Omaha, Neb., will be consolidated into the Green Bay office over the next several months.

Because as sure as the chain's e-commerce president Sona Chawla is to Walgreens as Scotty is to the USS Enterprise, Walgreens is moving at light speed in monetizing and capitalizing on multichannel retailing. And the chain hasn't even got its multichannel engines really revved yet.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Mass merchandiser Shopko will open a new Shopko Hometown store in the city of Seymour, Wis., the chain said in December.

The company said the new store would focus on retail health by offering pharmacy services and a full eye care center. Shopko had acquired the former Seymour Pharmacy and planned to run the store at its current location until it could construct a new store, but said it would retain the pharmacists and staff.
