Brookshire Grocery has joined the Environmental Protection Agency's GreenChill partnership, the supermarket chain said.

TYLER, Texas — Brookshire Grocery Co. has joined the Environmental Protection Agency's GreenChill partnership, the supermarket chain said.

BGC said that by joining the initiative, it will work toward sustainability and protecting consumers' health and the environment. According to the EPA, a typical supermarket leaks about 1,000 pounds of refrigerant gas into the atmosphere each year, and BGC said it would work to reduce those emissions.

Two Weis stores containing a new, environmentally efficient design have earned environmental certifications awards from the GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership, a voluntary Environmental Protection Agency alliance with food retailers to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their impact on the ozone layer and climate change, the grocer announced Wednesday.

Safeway’s store in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C., has earned Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The 71,067-sq.-ft. store is the grocer’s second LEED-certified store and the first LEED-certified store in D.C.
