SAN DIEGO Two drug makers conducting a late-stage clinical trial of a drug for treating overweight and obese patients said the drug produced significant weight loss in patients with Type 2 diabetes.

 

Arena Pharmaceuticals and Eisai reported results of the one-year “BLOOM-DM” phase-3 trial of the drug lorcaserin, showing that a significant number of patients lost 5% to 10% of their weight by the end of the trial. Patients taking the drug also showed improvements in blood sugar levels, compared with those taking placebo.

Reuters reported IMS Health SVP Murray Aitken as saying at the Reuters Health Summit that generics also would increase their dominance in terms of prescriptions dispensed, increasing from 77% during the first half of this year to perhaps 85% by 2014.

CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted a patent to the privately owned company Pop Test for a means for diabetics to measure their glucose levels without drawing blood, Pop Test said Tuesday.

 

The company said it is conducting clinical trials on a glucose test that uses saliva to allow Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes patients to monitor blood glucose, and can detect abnormally low and abnormally high blood sugar levels.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. Biotech company Amgen took home a top award for one of its drugs at an annual event for drug makers, the company said Friday.

 

Amgen won the Best New Drug award for the osteoporosis treatment Prolia (denosumab) at the 2010 Scrip Awards in London Thursday.

 

The drug works by targeting the cells that break down bone, called osteoclasts, and was named one of the top 10 medical breakthroughs of 2009 in Time magazine.
