DUBLIN, Ohio — Cardinal Health on Thursday announced it is providing free, downloadable materials to help community pharmacists educate patients about effective strategies for preventing cardiovascular disease.  “By using these patient-friendly heart health materials, community pharmacists can strengthen their relationships with patients and help save lives by educating their communities about how to prevent and recognize the symptoms of heart attacks and strokes," stated Ron Clerico, VP marketing for Cardinal Health’s Retail Pharmacy business.

IRVINE, Calif. — West Coast University's new School of Pharmacy has picked a dean, the school said Wednesday.

The university announced the appointment of Naushad M. Khan Ghilzai as the founding dean of the school, which will be at the university's Los Angeles campus. Ghilzai most recently served as associate dean for faculty at LECOM School of Pharmacy in Erie, Pa., and in Bradenton, Fla.

WASHINGTON — Department of Health and Human Services secretary Kathleen Sebelius on Wednesday announced a $750 million investment in prevention and public health, funded through the Prevention and Public Health Fund created by the new healthcare law.

“Prevention is something that can’t just happen in a doctor’s office,” Sebelius said. “If we are to address the big health issues of our time, from physical inactivity to poor nutrition to tobacco use, it needs to happen in local communities.”

WASHINGTON The Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday awarded $10 million to 10 national nonprofit organizations to support public health efforts to reduce tobacco use and reduce obesity through increased physical activity and improved nutrition.

These competitive awards are part of the HHS Communities Putting Prevention to Work initiative, a prevention and wellness initiative funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
