In this exclusive report, Drug Store News, in partnership with our friends at the Food Marketing Institute, profiles the health-and-wellness leaders of supermarket pharmacy.

So many of the chronic conditions that continue to challenge the U.S. healthcare system tie back to rising obesity rates and the simple fact that here, in the land of plenty, Americans eat too much — particularly, too much of the wrong stuff. With that, today's supermarket pharmacies, ideally positioned to help fill the gap between the physician's office and everyday life, are emerging with unique solutions, leveraging the food-pharmacy connection to help Americans reduce costs and improve health outcomes.

NEW YORK The expansion of MinuteClinic's partnership with Humana not only further illustrates the important role that retail-based clinics play in the U.S. healthcare system and the model's growing acceptance among third-party payers, but it also underscores the significance of worksite clinics.

NEW YORK A whole slew of health policy-makers, health-reform advocates, federal and state lawmakers, budget hawks and healthcare stakeholders — not to mention the Obama administration and the managed care industry — are desperately searching for ways to cut out-of-control healthcare spending and rein in the spiraling national deficit. But one of the biggest potential levers for curbing healthcare spending doesn’t seem to be getting the attention it deserves.

As the healthcare reform debate continues and discussions of public vs. private are tossed about, what seems to be getting lost in all of the muck are the cost-controlling levers that already exist, like those reforms CVS Caremark's Tom Ryan outlined.

For example, getting patients to take their medications as prescribed could have a major impact on driving down costs -- to the tune of billions of dollars a year -- while improving healthcare outcomes of patients.

NEW YORK Question: What piece of compromise legislation proposes to overhaul the U.S. healthcare system at a price tag of $856 billion and promises to address both the unsustainable costs of that system and the crisis of uninsured and under-insured Americans – while failing to fully satisfy almost everyone involved in the health reform debate?

NEW YORK The complications that can result from unhealthy eating among middle-aged and elderly Americans with Type 2 diabetes have consequences for the whole healthcare system, but it’s not just diabetes, which already costs the U.S. healthcare system $116 billion. Unhealthy eating habits contribute to and exacerbate obesity, hypertension and kidney disease, diseases that often have causal relationships to one another. Obesity and diabetes already cost the healthcare system $147 billion and $116 billion, respectively.

NEW YORK CVS Caremark’s 2009 “Health IQ” study is yet another indicator coming from the private sector that health reform cannot wait.

The findings come on the heels of another sign: PhRMA’s resurrection of the Harry and Louise characters, the middle class couple who helped to defeat the Clinton healthcare reform proposal, in a new multi-million dollar ad campaign developed in collaboration with Families USA, the national organization for healthcare consumers. This time, however, Harry and Louise are in support of healthcare reform.

NEW YORK The fact that Take Care Health Systems has expanded its service offering to include nebulizer treatments is important for several reasons, one of which is that it will further help alleviate some of the pressure at overflowing emergency rooms.

The move also helps Take Care Health prepare to deal with chronic disease management for asthma in all of its clinics.

NEW YORK After decades of fruitless efforts, activist lawmakers in a Democratically controlled Congress finally may be on the verge of pushing through one of the most elusive policy goals of the past half-century: a massive reform of the U.S. healthcare system that aims to extend health coverage to most Americans and put a clamp on federal healthcare spending.

If you could be a superhero for one day, what special powers do you think you would choose for yourself? Would it be the power of flight? How about invisibility? Or invincibility?

What if I told you none of that gets you anywhere in Washington? If you really want to be a hero in Washington, you need a set of super powers that on the surface might seem pretty ordinary, like the power of utter visibility, the power of seamless communication or the power to persuade and convince.

NEW YORK Did RxIMPACT Day make an impact? You bet.

If there were any members of Congress that hadn’t noticed the more than 150 members of the community pharmacy community making their way around the Capitol — many of them clad in the white lab coats symbolic of the profession — on Weds., certainly there couldn’t have been a member on the Hill that hadn’t felt their presence by the time the day was done.

The announcement by Take Care Health Systems that it is offering free health services at its clinics throughout the rest of the year for those who lose their jobs couldn't have come at a more critical time.

In fact, the numbers just came in, and it doesn’t look good. The nation’s unemployment rate rose to 8.5% in March, the highest since late 1983. And, as we all know, the loss of a job too often means the loss of health benefits.

“I’m not willing to say it was a great move at this point.”—BusinessWeek Feb. 12, 2009.

That’s what Morningstar analyst Mitchell Corwin had to say about the 2007 merger that created the $76 billion healthcare goliath now known as CVS Caremark. He’s entitled to his opinion, but you have to believe there was probably a whole lot of people waiting to greet Columbus upon his return to remind him that despite his killer suntan, the world most definitely was still flat. And no amount of corn or cocoa would make them think otherwise.

This full-page ad taken out by Walgreens is important as it comes at a time when healthcare reform is top of mind.

The ad serves as a call to action for healthcare providers, along with state and federal government, to work together to develop a high quality and affordable healthcare system. It also calls for payers, politicians and policy makers to recognize the value of an expanded role for retail-based clinics beyond simply acute care.
