TOPEKA, Kan. — Gov. Sam Brownback of Kansas attended the grand opening of a new pharmacy hub that will serve post-acute patients in and around the state.

AlixaRx announced Wednesday the opening of the 11,400-sq. ft. Lenexa, Kan., hub, for which the company invested $1.4 million in new equipment and training and hired 42 employees. The hub will provide pharmacy services to nursing facilities in Kansas and neighboring states.

LONDON — An experimental human papillomavirus vaccine made by Merck could offer a boost to the vaccine market, but the company will have to use effective marketing efforts to ensure uptake, according to a new study.

The London-based research and consulting firm GlobalData said Merck's V503 vaccine, currently in phase-3 clinical trials, had strong potential because it protects against five HPV types not covered by current vaccines and demonstrates 97% efficacy against precancerous lesions caused by the additional virus types it contains.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has requested label and packaging changes of certain over-the-counter topical antiseptic products, according to an FDA MedWatch alert emailed Thursday. "We are requesting that manufacturers package antiseptics indicated for preoperative or preinjection skin preparation in single-use containers," the alert stated. "The antiseptics in these single-use containers should be applied only one time to one patient.

MedImmune said Wednesday a partnership with Pantley, author of the No-Cry Solution parenting book series, to publish "A Parent's Guide to Flu Season." The guide is designed to educate parents on the importance of flu prevention and help them navigate through flu myths and misconceptions.

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. — Medical supplies manufacturer BD has joined an organization focused on patient safety, the company said Wednesday.

BD, also known as Becton, Dickinson and Co., announced that it joined the National Patient Safety Foundation's corporate council, a move that it said would enable it to work alongside the NPSF and constituent groups, including healthcare providers, other service and product providers and patients and family representatives to raise awareness of patient safety issues and find solutions for them.

And 43% of Americans continue to go to work when they have a cough or cold. 

And it's not just sick people with unhealthy habits. According to the survey, 23% of healthy Americans make no effort to stay away from cough and cold sufferers.

NEW YORK — Rite Aid has stopped selling some cold medicines containing pseudoephedrine at its stores in West Virginia, according to published reports.

The Charleston, W.Va., Gazette reported that the chain would stop selling medicines that have pseudoephedrine as their only active ingredient, such as Sudafed 12 Hour and Sudafed 24 Hour, though they would continue selling products that combine pseudoephedrine with other ingredients like antihistamines and painkillers.
