CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Harris Teeter on Wednesday announced its opening of a new store here, with a grand opening celebration to be held May 29. 

Charlotte, N.C. — Harris Teeter Together in Education (TIE) on Monday donated more than $385,000 to participating TIE schools during the second of three payouts of the 2012/2013 school year, raising the program total to $18.7 million since 1998.

NEW YORK — Publix may join Royal Ahold later this month in making a bid for the more than 200 Harris Teeter supermarkets, according to a report published Friday by Bloomberg, citing people with knowledge of the situation. 

Virginia and North Carolina would represent new markets for Publix if the Florida-based grocer acquired Harris Teeter. Publix has already marked North Carolina for expansion with plans to open two stores in the state in 2014. 

NEW YORK — Royal Ahold may be one step closer to acquiring Harris Teeter, though the Dutch supermarket conglomerate has yet to make a formal bid, according to a story published Friday morning by Bloomberg. 

Citing persons familiar with any potential acquisition pursuit, Bloomberg reported Ahold has contacted JPMorgan Chase, which has been retained by Harris Teeter to evaluate options.

NEW YORK — Supermarket operator Ahold USA could be in a position to buy Matthews, N.C.-based supermarket chain Harris Teeter, according to published reports.

Citing remarks by BMO Capital Markets analyst Karen Short, the Wall Street Journal reported that Ahold, Publix Super Markets and Kroger Co. would be candidates for a purchase of Harris Teeter, with Ahold named as the most logical candidate due to an acquisitive nature and a desire to enter the southern United States.

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Carolina retailer Harris Teeter may be exploring a sale, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday evening. 

According to the report, Harris Teeter is being advised by JP Morgan. WSJ tabulated Harris Teeter's market value at $1.8 billion for its 200 supermarkets.

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Harris Teeter Supermarkets on Thursday declared a quarterly dividend in the amount of $0.15 per share to be paid on Jan. 1, to shareholders of record on Dec. 14. This represents a $0.01 increase in the quarterly dividend amount, from the $0.14 per share that the company paid in previous quarters.

Harris Teeter also announced that its board declared a special dividend of $0.50 per share to be paid on Dec. 31 to shareholders of record on Dec. 14.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two North Carolina-based grocery stores have announced a purchase and sale agreement.

Harris Teeter will acquire 10 of the Lowes Foods' store locations in the central Carolinas region, while Lowes Foods will acquire six Harris Teeter store locations in western North Carolina. In addition to six of its stores being acquired by Lowes Foods, Harris Teeter said it also will pay the latter $26.5 million. The transaction is expected to be completed in the company's third quarter of fiscal 2012, which ends July 1.
