Talk about a bold retail vision. Walgreens president and CEO Greg Wasson said the nation’s top pharmacy retailer wants nothing less than to “own well.” He’s serious. Owning “well” — or, put another way, becoming the nation’s top retail resource for pharmacy and health-and-wellness services and products — is the kind of declaration few retail pharmacy executives would dare utter. But Wasson isn’t running just any drug store chain.

Walgreens is expanding the distribution of its Boots' No7 beauty brand across its New York City store base, Greg Wasson, president and CEO Walgreens, told analysts Tuesday morning.

"We completed the rollout to 10 stores in February and plan to reach 150 stores in the City," Wasson said.

Walgreens posted a sales gain of 0.8% for the fiscal year ended Aug. 31, reaching a record $72.2 billion and filling a record 821 million prescriptions.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens posted a sales gain of 0.8% for the fiscal year ended Aug. 31, reaching a record $72.2 billion and filling a record 821 million prescriptions. That volume of prescriptions filled helped Walgreens boost its retail pharmacy market share for the fiscal year to 19.1%. 

Early morning trading boosted Walgreens' share price from a close of $53.80 on Monday to $56.06, an increase of 4.2%.

In fiscal year 2012, Kerr Drug’s retail drug stores and specialty pharmacy business recorded total sales of $381 million.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — AmerisourceBergen and Walgreens on Tuesday officially launched the previously announced 10-year relationship to distribute pharmaceuticals to more than 8,100 Walgreens locations across the country. With today’s launch, AmerisourceBergen becomes the primary supplier of brand pharmaceutical products across all of Walgreens locations, the wholesaler stated. In the coming months, AmerisourceBergen will assume primary distribution of all generic products to Walgreens.

segment Tuesday afternoon on the hiring of Americans with disabilities. Walgreens employs approximately 1,000 persons with disabilities throughout its supply chain, or 10% of its supply chain workforce. Wasson wants to hit that mark across its retail workforce as well, Wasson said.

The collaboration between Community Health Network and Walgreens' Healthcare Clinic is officially underway as of last week, the companies announced. It's just one manifestation of how retail clinics and the pharmacies that house them will contribute to making health care more cost-efficient in the years ahead through coordinated care vetted by improved outcomes.

In fact, 2014 will be the year of the retail clinic. The collaboration dovetails nicely with Walgreens' plans to significantly expand the scope of care found at Healthcare Clinic that president and CEO Greg Wasson talked about at the company's last quarterly conference call. "These new services include diagnosis, treatment and management for hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and asthma, as well as additional preventive health services," he said.

The evolution of services now available at retail pharmacy has gained traction with news organizations targeting the investment community. CNNMoney recently spoke at length with one of the retail pharmacy change catalysts — Greg Wasson of Walgreens.

Wasson and other retail pharmacy operators have been blazing a new pathway to cheaper and more convenient health care for some time now. Inoculations and medication therapy management programs were ever only the beginning, because the future of retail pharmacy is in successfully managing lives with a healthcare system partner. "There's an opportunity for the pharmacist to play a much greater role in health care, especially with what we have going on in this country with the shortage of primary-care physicians," Wasson explained to CNNMoney.
