With the defeat of Democrat Martha Coakley by Republican Scott Brown in the race to fill the seat of late Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, and the loss of the Democrats’ filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, the healthcare-reform bill stands on a knife’s edge. And how will pharmacies be reimbursed for dispensing generic drugs to Medicaid and Medicare patients if a health overhaul bill fails to pass? These topics, along with the issue of patent settlements vexing the branded and generic drug industries and a new GAO study showing that drug costs are soaring, are explored in depth in the latest installment of the ECRM Generics report.

NEW YORK What do diabetes supplies for retail pharmacy Medicare patients, the Pittsburgh Steelers' chance of defending their Super Bowl title and Old Father Time 2009 all have in common? They all could be no more not too long after Dick Clark counts down to the New Year for the 38th time.

And of those three, losing diabetes supplies for retail pharmacy Medicare patients will certainly be the most devastating. (Unless you live in Steel Town. And you don’t have diabetes.)

NEW YORK A small group of U.S. representatives from both parties has asked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for changes in health-reform legislation that would boost payment rates to hard-pressed pharmacies when dispensing generic drugs to Medicaid patients.

NEW YORK To paraphrase a quote often attributed — but probably incorrectly — to 19th century German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, if you like either laws or sausages, it’s best not to watch them being made.

That maxim could certainly apply to the seemingly endless bickering over the details of the health-reform debate in Congress. But in an era of constant Internet news feeds, blogging and instantaneous, on-the-spot reporting and analysis, it’s virtually impossible to avoid the spectacle.

NEW YORK This kind of news is more notable for what it doesn’t mean than what it means. And what it doesn’t mean is good news for the dietary supplement industry, because what it doesn’t mean is the industry is “unregulated,” or even “loosely regulated,” for those of you keeping track of how often reporters on some of the major dailies get it wrong.

NEW YORK After months of hard-edged wrangling in Congress, on the Sunday morning political gab fests, on talk radio, in angry town-hall meetings and in dueling blogs online, the fate of President Obama’s top domestic priority – namely, the overhaul of the nation’s fractured healthcare system and the expansion of health coverage to the uninsured – appeared increasingly threatened. A growing chorus of Beltway insiders and pundits on the left and right were all but declaring health-reform legislation dead in the water for 2009.

NEW YORK The simple fact is — there are more fat people in this country than there are skinny people. Some 66% of Americans field a body-mass index above 25, according to the 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. And as part of that figure, there are more than 72 million Americans who are clinically obese, with BMIs over 30, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

NEW YORK Almost one-third of those community pharmacists who already offered DMEPOS services responded that they would cease delivering Medicare services if Congress doesn’t act soon.

That should be a wake-up call for Congress.

The announcement by Take Care Health Systems that it is offering free health services at its clinics throughout the rest of the year for those who lose their jobs couldn't have come at a more critical time.

In fact, the numbers just came in, and it doesn’t look good. The nation’s unemployment rate rose to 8.5% in March, the highest since late 1983. And, as we all know, the loss of a job too often means the loss of health benefits.
