The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug made by Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca for treating Type 2 diabetes, the agency said.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug made by Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca for treating Type 2 diabetes, the agency said Wednesday.

The FDA announced the approval of Farxiga (dapagliflozin) tablets, designed for use with exercise and dietary adjustments to control blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes affects about 24 million people in the United States, accounting for more than 90% of diabetes cases.

The FDA announced the approval of J&J subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals' Invokana (canagliflozin) tablets, designed for use with diet and exercise to improve blood-sugar control in adults with the disease.

RARITAN, N.J. -- A panel of Food and Drug Administration experts has recommended approval for an experimental Type 2 diabetes drug made by Johnson & Johnson, the drug maker said.

J&J said the FDA's Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee had recommended approval for canagliflozin, which the company plans to market under the name brand Invokana. The FDA is not required to follow the votes of advisory committees when deciding whether or not to approve a drug, but usually does.

AIRPORT CITY, Israel — SodaStream has launched a new line of flavors sweetened with an all-natural plant-based sweetener.

SodaStream said its stevia-laden flavors initially will launch in Europe, with U.S. sales expected to begin this summer. The initial flavors, with less than five calories per serving, include pink grapefruit, peach-pear, orange, lemon-lime, cranberry-apple and others.
