Passage Foods said its partnership with Beth Hillson, who was diagnosed with celiac disease in 1976 and also serves as president of the American Celiac Disease Alliance and recently penned "Gluten-Free Makeovers," will help cater to time-starved consumers who want home cooked meals that are nutritious, healthy and gluten free.

Whenever Bars are soft and chewy, gluten-free, whole-grain bars that are delicious, healthy and convenient, the company stated. Available in four flavors — oat blueberry lemon, oat cranberry almond, oat chocolate chip coconut and oat raisin walnut spice — the line will be available nationwide for an SRP of $4.99 per box, five bars per box, and also is available on Amazon.com.

PITTSBURGH — NuGo Nutrition on Wednesday announced the launch of its diabetic-friendly meal-replacement bar product line called NuGo Slim. The line is being billed as the first almost sugar-free high-protein bar made without maltitol, an artificial sweetener. The 2 g of sweet goodness comes naturally from real dark chocolate, the company stated.

The NuGo Slim bars contain 15 g of protein and have 180 calories and 2.5 g of saturated fat. Chicory root, a natural dietary fiber, adds 9 g of fiber and naturally sweetens the body of the bar.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration is looking for comments from consumers, the food industry and others about proposed labeling for gluten-free foods.

Originally proposed in 2007, the proposals include a requirement that foods labeled as "gluten-free" can't contain 20 parts per million or more gluten, a protein that occurs in wheat, rye and barley. The proposal was based on technologies used to detect gluten in food, which can't detect it reliably if the level is less than 20 ppm.

EZ Gluten was developed to help the food industry and consumers detect gluten in food and beverages, and delivers results in about 15 minutes. The kit is sensitive enough to detect levels of gluten as low as 10 parts per million.

NEW YORK — Introducing a gluten-free diet to an infant may not reduce its risk of developing Type 1 diabetes, according to a new study published in Diabetes Care.

German researchers analyzed data pooled from 150 infants with a first-degree family history of Type 1 diabetes and randomly exposed them to gluten at the age of 6 months (control group) or 12 months (late-exposure group). The infants then were followed until 3 years of age (and annually thereafter for safety purposes).

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Consumers with celiac disease and gluten sensitivity now can add a popular cereal brand to their diet.

Kellogg's said that its Rice Krispies brand will tout a gluten-free version, which will hit store shelves in June, carrying the same suggested retail price as original Rice Krispies. Each serving of the new gluten-free cereal contains 120 calories, less than 1 g of sugar, 1 g each of fat and fiber, 3 g of protein and 190 mg of sodium.

The introduction marks Kellogg's first-ever gluten-free cereal.

The Packaged Facts report, "Gluten-Free Foods and Beverages in the U.S., Third Edition," found that the gluten-free food and beverage market reached an estimated $2.6 billion in retail sales in 2010. Packaged Facts added that it projects the gluten-free products market will grow to $6 billion in 2015.
