Abbott voluntarily recalled the FreeStyle Blood Glucose Meter and the FreeStyle Flash Blood Glucose Meter, neither of which have been in production since 2010.

ALAMEDA, Calif. — Abbott on Friday voluntarily recalled the FreeStyle Blood Glucose Meter and the FreeStyle Flash Blood Glucose Meter, neither of which have been in production since 2010. Other Abbott Diabetes Care meters are not affected by the recall. 

When used with the Abbott FreeStyle test strips, the FreeStyle Blood Glucose Meter and the FreeStyle Flash Blood Glucose Meter may produce mistakenly low blood glucose results. Abbott began notifying users on Feb. 19, 2014, immediately after the issue was discovered.

INDIANAPOLIS — Adults living with diabetes in the United States reported highest satisfaction using Roche Diabetes Care's Accu-Chek products compared with other blood-glucose-meter manufacturers, according to the inaugural J.D. Power and Associates 2012 Blood Glucose Meter Satisfaction Study released Tuesday. 

The study gathered responses from 2,681 current meter users with type 1 and 2 diabetes in the U.S. to determine customer satisfaction across six factors: performance; ease of use; design; features; cost of test strips; and training.

NEW YORK — Target has launched new products and a co-pay assistance program for customers with diabetes, the mass merchandise retailer said.

Target announced the release of new blood glucose meters and test strips. The retailer also offers products like alternative site lancets, alcohol prep pads and diabetic nutritional shakes.

The company also announced the launch of a $4 co-pay assistance program, as well as a free private-label blood glucose meter for customers who qualify for the program.

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. — Regulators have approved a new blood-glucose monitoring system made by Bayer HealthCare, the company said.

Bayer announced the Food and Drug Administration's approval of Contour Next EZ, which includes a meter and test strip sensors that the company said would improve accuracy.

Bayer said the system is being introduced on a market-by-market basis and will be available in the United States this summer.

PatientsLikeMe said patients will be able to report daily glucose levels, as well as continue sharing and learning from HbA1C scores, treatments and dosages, in addition to symptoms and severity.

The feature will be launched in early December, PatientsLikeMe said.

Glooko has launched the logbook app and MeterSync cable, which allow patients to automatically download data from their blood-glucose meters to their iPhones, add notes and send results to their healthcare providers.

The cable costs $40 and works with popular glucose meters made by Bayer, FreeStyle and OneTouch.

BASEL, Switzerland — Roche has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its new generation of blood-glucose test strips.

Roche said that its Accu-Chek Aviva Plus test strips are maltose-independent test strips that are designed to prevent the interference of maltose on blood-sugar readings, which can occur in rare cases when drugs containing or metabolizing to maltose are parenterally administered.

The Accu-Chek Aviva Plus test strip is cleared for patient self-monitoring of blood glucose and can be used with the Accu-Chek Aviva system.
