PARSIPPANY, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic drug designed to treat asthma in children.

Watson Pharmaceuticals announced Wednesday the approval of budesonide inhalation suspension in the 0.25-mg/2-mL and 0.5-mg/2-mL strengths. The drug is used to control and prevent asthma symptoms in children ages 12 months to 8 years.

The drug is a generic version of AstraZeneca's Pulmicort Respules, which had sales of $1.1 billion during the 12-month period ended in May.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug for a rare disorder that previously had no approved medical therapies, the agency said.

The FDA announced the approval of Menlo Park, Calif.-based Corcept Therapeutics' Korlym (mifepristone) for endogenous Cushing's syndrome, a disorder that results from overproduction of cortisol, a steroid hormone that increases blood-sugar levels.

JERUSALEM — The Food and Drug Administration has accepted an approval application for a drug made by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries for treating allergies, Teva said.

The Israeli drug maker said the FDA accepted its application for BDP Nasal HFA (beclomethasone dipropionate hydrofluoroalkane) for the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis and perennial allergic rhinitis. The drug is a nasal aerosol corticosteroid.

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. — Upsher-Smith Labs has launched a topical medication for itching and inflammation of the skin resulting from such conditions as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, the company said Monday.

Upsher-Smith announced the launch of Trianex (triamcinolone acetonide) ointment, which the company described as a prescription topical corticosteroid that offers the feel of a cream and the strength of an ointment.

Drug maker Perrigo has reached a licensing agreement with Nycomed US that will allow it to launch a generic treatment for dermatitis in 2012, the company said.

ALLEGAN, Mich. — Drug maker Perrigo has reached a licensing agreement with Nycomed US that will allow it to launch a generic treatment for dermatitis in 2012, the company said.

Perrigo said it agreed to settle all Hatch-Waxman litigation relating to its generic version of Cutivate (fluticasone) lotion with Nycomed, allowing it to launch under a licensing agreement in September 2012.

Cutivate is used to treat dermatitis in patients ages 1 year and older and had sales of about $50 million during the 12-month period ended in February, according to Wolters Kluwer.

ALLEGAN, Mich. — Generic drug maker Perrigo has filed for approval of a drug to treat psoriasis with the Food and Drug Administration.

Perrigo announced Tuesday that it had filed an application with the FDA for calcipotriene and betamethasone dipropionate in the 0.005%/0.064% strength. The drug is a generic version of Leo Pharma’s Taclonex and is used to treat psoriasis vulgaris in adults.

SILVER SPRING, Md. Some stolen inhalers for patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have turned up in pharmacies, the Food and Drug Administration warned Friday.

Two lots of GlaxoSmithKline’s Advair Diskus (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol) were stolen from a warehouse near Richmond, Va., last August, with lot numbers 9ZP2255 – NDC 0173-0696-00 and 9ZP3325 – NDC 0173-0697-00. The inhalers recently found were the first from the stolen lots to turn up in commerce, the FDA said.
