Consumer spending to increase for holidays; gift cards to be popular

More than half of consumers say they plan to spend $500 or more on gifts this holiday season, slightly more than what they planned on spending in 2011, according to PriceGrabber’s winter holiday shopping survey.

The survey of online shopping consumers, conducted from Aug. 31 to Sept. 12, revealed that 75% planned to shop with online retailers, 74% said they’d shop at discount stores and 49% planned to shop at traditional department stores.

Whole Foods Market has launched two new eco-friendly gift cards, with plans to replace the recycled plastic cards that will be phased out over time.

AUSTIN, Texas — Whole Foods Market has launched two new eco-friendly gift cards, with plans to replace the recycled plastic cards that will be phased out over time.

The new cards — one made of paper and the other of responsibly harvested wood — are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and have a lower carbon footprint, are reusable, recyclable, compostable and require less energy to be produced.

NRF: Gift card spending to reach $27.8 billion this holiday season

Holiday shoppers are expected to spend $155.43 on average for gift cards this season, while total gift card spending is projected to reach $27.8 billion, according to a survey released Friday by the National Retail Federation.

NRF’s 2011 Holiday Consumer Intentions and Actions survey, conducted by BIGresearch, found that 8-out-of-10 shoppers will give gift cards this year, thanks to e-gifting, instant delivery through Facebook, personalized video and mobile giving options. Average spending is expected to be the highest since 2007.
