Giant, based in Carlisle, Pa., is partnering with Aria Health FastCare on the clinic, providing the space while Aria provides the staff. The clinic will be the fourth. Lancaster, Pa., General Hospital is also partnering with Giant to operate another clinic.

That’s Andrew Markievich, manager of pharmacy clinical programs for Ahold USA, the big Dutch-based owner-operator of U.S. supermarket chains like Stop & Shop and Giant Food in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic region. Speaking to Drug Store News’ Alaric DeArment, Markievich was describing a new campaign at Ahold USA’s more than 560 food-store pharmacies “to take a more active, deliberate role in communicating with our patients.”

Carlilsle, Pa.-based Giant, also known as Giant-Carlisle to distinguish it from Giant Food of Landover, Md., announced that it had finished remodeling its Bensalem, Pa., store. Both chains are owned by Ahold USA.

Ahold USA division Giant Food Stores has raised $540,888 for the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, the chain said Wednesday.

CARLISLE, Pa. — Ahold USA division Giant Food Stores has raised $540,888 for the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, the chain said Wednesday.

Giant-Carlisle, which also includes Martin's Food Markets, allowed customers to donate $1 to purchase paper balloons. The chain has been supporting CMN Hospitals for 17 years and recently passed the $30 million fundraising mark.

The money from the campaign will be donated to children's hospitals in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Richmond, Va., and the Pennsylvania cities of Harrisburg, Danville and Altoona.

PURCHASE, N.Y. — Stop & Shop is expanding a program to educate children about nutrition, the Ahold USA-owned supermarket chain said.

The chain announced that it would update and expand the Passport to Nutrition program to organizations that educate and work with children, such as schools, summer camps and scouting groups. The announcement follows a similar announcement last week by Landover, Md.-based sister chain Giant Food.

AMSTERDAM — A liquor store chain owned by Netherlands-based Royal Ahold has introduced a "pick-and-mix" concept for specialty beers.

Gall & Gall, which operates stores across the Netherlands, is making all specialty beers available individually by the bottle while adding 30 new products and allowing customers to buy six bottles for the price of five. Beers are grouped according to flavor category, such as blonde, dubbel, dark, triple and "other special."

ZAANDAM, Netherlands — Ahold repurchased 3.3 million shares as part of a share-buyback program announced earlier this year, the Dutch supermarket operator said.

Ahold said it repurchased the shares at a price of $15.25 per share for a total of $50.2 million. The company operates the Stop & Shop, Giant Food of Landover, Md., and Giant Food Stores of Carlisle, Pa., supermarket chains and the Peapod grocery-delivery service in the United States, as well as several retail chains in Europe.

Last Friday, Giant Food Stores of Carlisle, Pa., also known as Giant-Carlisle, announced a $517,535 donation through its annual Support Our Troops campaign, which benefits regional USO chapters in the area where Giant has stores, including Pennsylvania, West Virginia and parts of Virginia and Maryland.

CARLISLE, Pa. — A division of Ahold USA is donating millions of dollars to local schools.

Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets, also known as Giant-Carlisle, announced Wednesday the donation of $3 million to 2,868 public and private schools through its A+ School Rewards program for the 2012-2013 school year. The program has donated more than $16 million since 2005. The program allows local schools to earn money for technology, scholarships, school programs, field trips, playgrounds and other needs.

The Ahold USA-owned banner, also known as Giant-Landover, announced it would launch its ninth annual Triple Winner game on Friday to benefit the Pediatric Oncology Division at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and The Children's Cancer Foundation. The annual game has helped raise $11.5 million to support pediatric cancer research since its inception in 2005.

CARLISLE, Pa. — Thirty-five Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Markets stores in Pennsylvania and Virginia will sponsor drug take-back events later this month.

The chains, which collectively comprise Ahold USA's Giant-Carlisle banner, will sponsor the events on April 27, in partnership with local law enforcement agencies and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Patients can bring expired and unwanted medications, which will be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner for free.
