Walgreens on Thursday named James Skinner, Walgreens board member since 2005 and recently retired McDonald's CEO, as the new nonexecutive chairman of the board of Walgreens.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens on Thursday named James Skinner, Walgreens board member since 2005 and recently retired McDonald's CEO, as the new nonexecutive chairman of the board of Walgreens. Skinner will succeed Al McNally, who has served on the Walgreens board since 1999 and as nonexecutive chairman since 2009. McNally will continue serving on the Walgreens board.

BOLINGBROOK, Ill. — Ulta posted double-digit gains in same-store sales and net income during the fourth quarter.

Net sales for the quarter ended Jan. 28 rose 23% to $582.5 million. Same-store sales rose 11.5%, compared with an increase of 10.4% during the year-ago period.

Net income increased 53.8% to $46.3 million, or 73 cents per diluted share, compared with $30.1 million, or 49 cents per diluted share, in the year-ago period.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens has transformed 68 locations in the Indianapolis market into health and daily living destinations.

The drug store chain hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday at a store located on 16th and Meridian in Indianapolis. On hand at the ceremony were Walgreens president and CEO Greg Wasson, former Indianpolis Colts coach Tony Dungy and Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind.

The stores are part of Walgreens' pilot program that launched last year in Chicago.

Beauty retailer Ulta Beauty posted a same-store sales increase of 12.6% during the seven-week holiday period.

BOLINGBROOK, Ill. — Beauty retailer Ulta Beauty posted a same-store sales increase of 12.6% during the seven-week holiday period.

Total net sales for the seven-week holiday period, from Nov. 13 to Dec. 31, were $386 million, a 24.4% increase from the prior-year holiday period of $310.4 million. Comparable store-sales for the 2011 holiday period increased 12.6%, compared with a 9.5% increase during the same period in the prior year. Over a two-year period, comparable store sales increased 22.1%.

According to published reports, Sara Lee will divide its meat and coffee businesses into two separate companies. In addition to its recent transaction with SC Johnson, Sara Lee has been streamlining its business by selling off its beauty and laundry detergent portfolios to Unilever for $1.6 billion. The deal closed last month.

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. — The European Commission has approved the sale of Sara Lee's global body care and European detergent businesses to Unilever, provided that Unilever divest the Sanex brand of bath and body products in the European market after it acquires the business from Sara Lee.

The global body care and European detergent businesses encompass such brands as Sanex, Radox and Duschdas. The transaction was originally announced in September.
