Unilever has acquired a majority stake in the Qinyuan Group, a Chinese water purification business — marking Unilever’s largest acquisition in China for more than 10 years.

SHANGHAI, LONDON and ROTTERDAM — Unilever has acquired a majority stake in the Qinyuan Group, a Chinese water purification business — marking Unilever’s largest acquisition in China for more than 10 years.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Qinyuan generated sales approaching €140 million for the 12-month period Dec. 31.

LOS ANGELES — A long-term study by UCLA, in collaboration with the University of Aarhus in Denmark, has raised concerns about the use of acetaminophen during pregnancy, UCLA announced earlier this week.  

In a report in the current online edition of JAMA Pediatrics, researchers from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health show that taking acetaminophen during pregnancy is associated with a higher risk in children of attention-deficity/hyperactivity disorder and hyperkinetic disorder.

ZUG, Switzerland — Following reports in the media in Mexico and Chile of discussions between Alliance Boots and Grupo Casa Saba and its shareholders, Alliance Boots on Wednesday confirmed that it has stopped all discussions with Casa Saba and its shareholders in connection with an investment in Casa Saba or a purchase of certain of Casa Saba’s assets. 

Alliance Boots' decision not to invest has been based on its inability to determine the current financial situation of Casa Saba, the company reported.

German chemical and pharmaceutical giant Bayer plans to buy Norwegian drug maker Algeta for $2.4 billion, Algeta confirmed Tuesday.

OSLO, Norway — German chemical and pharmaceutical giant Bayer plans to buy Norwegian drug maker Algeta for $2.4 billion, Algeta confirmed Tuesday.

Responding to earlier media reports, the Norway-based maker of cancer drugs said Bayer would acquire it for 336 krone per share, equal to about $55.05. The company's share price increased to 349.40 krone, or $57.21 per share, in late-afternoon trading Tuesday on the Oslo Stock Exchange.

ZAGREB, Croatia — Teva Pharmaceutical Industries is investing more than $100 million in its Croatian division for a plant that will make pills mostly for the international market.

Teva subsidiary Pliva said the new plant, in the capital of Zagreb, would considerably increase its production capacities for tablets and capsules. The company said the new plant would increase the annual manufacturing capacity by more than 25%.

Alliance Boots on Thursday announced that it has acquired ownership of its associate, Alliance Healthcare Russia, from AB Acquisitions Holdings Limited, the ultimate parent company of Alliance Boots.

ZUG, Switzerland — Alliance Boots on Thursday announced that it has acquired ownership of its associate, Alliance Healthcare Russia, from AB Acquisitions Holdings Limited, the ultimate parent company of Alliance Boots.

This follows the recently established strategic partnership with Walgreens, which included, among other things, an option for Walgreens to acquire the Alliance Healthcare Russia shareholding on exercise of its option to proceed to a full merger with Alliance Boots.
