After a strong performance for several years, sales of sports drinks are showing some fatigue. The category, which had registered double-digit growth for the last several years, saw sales flatten in 2012. The good news is that Mintel projects the market for sports drinks to grow by 52% from 2013 to 2017.

Sport and energy drinks are the hot spots of the beverage category. The sport segment, powered by such low-calorie products as PepsiCo’s Gatorade G2 and Coca-Cola’s Powerade Zero, has continued to register double-digit sales increases.

Energy drinks also continue to deliver double-digit sales jumps fueled by consumers eternally in search of a jump-start. Category leader Red Bull is closely followed by Monster Energy, which is pumping innovative new products into the category.

PURCHASE, N.Y. PepsiCo reportedly is making a lower-calorie Gatorade product line targeted at athletes.

 

PepsiCo's G Series Fit line of Gatorade includes a pre-workout energy bar and a fruit-based protein drink, according to published reports. The line builds on the success of other lower-calorie Gatorade products, including the brand's G2 line.

 

G Series Fit is slated to hit retail shelves in April.
