The regional retail pharmacy has partnered with StopColonCancerNow.com to promote the screenings, which screening guidelines advise adults older than 50 years to receive, or 45 years if they are African-American. According to the American Cancer Society, the five-year survival rate for colon cancer is 90% when detected and treated in the earliest stage.

The FDA announced the approval of Stivarga (regorafenib) for gastrointestinal stromal tumors that could not be removed through surgery or had spread to other parts of the body and were no longer responding to treatment with Novartis' Gleevec (imatinib) or Pfizer's Sutent (sunitinib).

Almost 1,000 participants ran in their underwear as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the area affected by colon cancer, raising $120,000 for Colon Cancer community programs.

The Philadelphia Undy 5000 featured the Colon Cancer Alliance’s Inflatable Colon; a giant, walk-through colon that shows the various stages of colon cancer, including descriptions about Crohn’s disease and Colitis.

The FDA approved Novartis' Gleevec (imatinib) for adults who have had gastrointestinal stromal tumors, or GIST, removed. The drug was specifically approved for people whose tumors are known as CD117-positive, which includes 95% of all GIST tumors.

The drug was originally approved in 2001 for a type of leukemia.

LONG BRANCH, N.J. — Temperatures eclipsed 90 degrees Fahrenheit for the second annual Jersey Shore Undy 5000 5-km race held here last month, where Team Dulcolax joined 665 people who turned out to support the colon cancer awareness-raising event. All told, participants generated more than $80,000 to help fight colon cancer. 


A portion of the funds raised from the Jersey Shore Undy 5000 will be locally distributed to fund services for those diagnosed with colon cancer.

Merrimack announced that it received the designation for MM-398, described as a novel, stable, nanotherapeutic encapsulation of the chemotherapy drug irinotecan.

4SC announced that it received the designation for resminostat, currently in phase-2 clinical trials as a treatment for hepatocellular cancer, or HCC. The FDA grants orphan drug designation to drugs for diseases that affect fewer than 200,000 people in the United States.

Pancreatic NET is a rare cancer reported in 2 million to 4 million people worldwide every year.

NEW ORLEANS Researchers at the Mayo Clinic may have found a link between colorectal cancer and diabetes in older women.

The findings, which are being presented at the American Gastroenterological Association's annual meeting, Digestive Disease Week 2010, examined data from 37,695 participants of the Iowa Women’s Health Study, which enrolled women ages 55 to 69 years in 1986 and remains ongoing. Of these women, 2,361 reported a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes and 1,200 developed colorectal cancer.
