Beauty mavens are loving their beauty devices. As untapped potential exists in Asian and European beauty devices markets, the United States has retained its global market share lead with strong double-digit growth in 2012, according to recent research.

Consulting and research firm Kline Group stated earlier this year that the U.S. beauty device market grew nearly 20% in 2012, driven by both new product launches from existing marketers and new players.

The awards honor top brands travelers across select global markets prefer to use on their trips. In the U.S., there were 21 winners in categories ranging from cameras to sunscreen and carry-on luggage. Winners also were announced in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, India, Italy, Spain and Russia.

NEW YORK — A new strain of the bacterium that causes whooping cough immune to vaccines may have appeared in the United States, according to a brief published Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The brief, filed by officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other health authorities, reported that a strain of Bordetella pertussis had been reported in Japan, France and Finland and may have appeared in Philadelphia, where 12 children were hospitalized between 2011 and 2012.

L’Oréal has signed an agreement with Castanea Partners to acquire the fashion-forward, edgy beauty brand Urban Decay.

NEWTON, Mass. — L’Oréal has signed an agreement with Castanea Partners to acquire the fashion-forward, edgy beauty brand Urban Decay.

Terms of the deal, which is expected to close by the end of the year, were not disclosed. In the fiscal year ended in June 2012, Urban Decay, which is sold in such beauty retailers as Ulta and Sephora, recorded net sales of $130 million.

In the United States, Urban Decay will report to Carol Hamilton, president of L'Oréal Luxe USA.

ATLANTA – Coca-Cola and Sanofi are partnering to launch a line of "beauty drinks" in France under the Oenobiol Beautific brand. The drinks claim to "help strengthen hair and nails, embellish skin, lose weight and improve vitality."

The beauty drinks will be sold in a "small scale pilot" to a limited number of pharmacies in the country, according to a statement from the Coca-Cola business unit in France. Coca-Cola declined to provide further details.

BURLINGTON, Mass. — Two classes of drugs for treating Type 2 diabetes will experience the biggest growth in market share of all classes of drugs for the condition, according to a new study by Decision Resources.

The study found that DPP-IV inhibitors and GLP-1 analogues would experience the biggest growth in market share among all drug classes, with a combined market share that will increase from 20% in 2010 to 47% in 2020 in the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and Japan.

PERRYSBURG, Ohio — Glass container manufacturer Owens-Illinois announced its acquisition of a single-furnace glass container plant in France.

O-I, which announced its intent to acquire the VDL Co. plant in Vergeze, France, last November, said that purchasing the plant was the result of the company's strategic relationship with Nestlé Waters — the plant is located near Nestlé Waters' Perrier bottling facility, and has a longstanding supply relationship with Nestlé Waters.

OSAKA, Japan — Two diabetes drugs made by Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. have been pulled from the market in France due to evidence that their use may increase the risk of bladder cancer, Takeda said.

Takeda said its French subsidiary, Laboratoires Takeda, would withdraw Actos (pioglitazone) and Competact (pioglitazone and metformin). In addition, Takeda said it was cooperating with the European Medicines Agency in a pan-European of pioglitazone. Competact is marketed in the United States under the brand name Actoplus Met.

PARIS — General Mills now has a 51% stake in Yoplait S.A.S. and a 50% interest in a related entity that holds the worldwide Yoplait brands, the company announced Friday.

General Mills acquired the ownership stakes from Europe-based private equity firm PAI Partners and Sodiaal, the largest dairy cooperative in France, for about $1.2 billion. With this transaction, Yoplait will be governed by a supervisory board with representation from General Mills and Sodiaal, as the remaining ownership stakes in both entities will continue to be held by Sodiaal.

A court in France has ordered generic drug maker Mylan to pay French drug maker Ipsen $24 million for allegedly misleading marketing of a drug, according to published reports.

PARIS — A court in France has ordered generic drug maker Mylan to pay French drug maker Ipsen $24 million for allegedly misleading marketing of a drug, according to published reports.

Bloomberg reported that Mylan had allegedly marketed the drug Vitalogink as a generic version of Ipsen’s Tanakan rather than as a “therapeutic equivalent.” Both drugs are derived from ginkgo biloba and are used to improve memory.

Mylan has said it will appeal the decision, Bloomberg reported.

The president of Procter & Gamble's global hair care business is taking on a new role at Sephora.

PARIS — The president of Procter & Gamble's global hair care business is taking on a new role at Sephora.

Effective March 31, Christopher de Lapuente will end his 28-year career at P&G to become the global president and CEO for beauty retailer Sephora, which is owned by luxury group LVMH. All regions worldwide will report to him. For European operations, de Lapuente succeeds Jacques Levy.

In addition to his responsibilities as global president and CEO for Sephora, de Lapuente also will be a member of LVMH's executive committee.
