Frozen food sales have been flat to declining for the past few years, according to a recent study from Packaged Facts, with nearly all dollar sales gains coming from higher prices or new products rather than increased consumer demand.

Hand-held frozen foods are the stars of the category, according to Mintel. Frozen breakfast food dollar sales were up 3.6% in the drug store channel, according to SymphonyIRI data, for the 12 weeks ended Aug. 12. Frozen appetizers and snacks also had single-digit growth.

Johnson & Johnson Consumer earlier this summer put the freeze on pain with the launch of its Bengay Zero Degrees line extension, an external analgesic rub that makes its home alongside the frozen peas in the freezer.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — Johnson & Johnson Consumer earlier this summer put the freeze on pain with the launch of its Bengay Zero Degrees line extension, an external analgesic rub that makes its home alongside the frozen peas in the freezer. According to the company, it’s the first and only topical pain reliever that can be stored in the freezer. Sales of the Bengay brand were up 6.4% to $8.9 million for the 12 weeks ended July 8 across food, drug and mass (excluding Walmart), according to SymphonyIRI Group data.

Two Weis stores containing a new, environmentally efficient design have earned environmental certifications awards from the GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership, a voluntary Environmental Protection Agency alliance with food retailers to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their impact on the ozone layer and climate change, the grocer announced Wednesday.

Frozen foods still are a popular choice. Packaged Facts projected that retail sales of frozen foods and beverages will reach $70 billion in 2015, a 25% increase over 2010 revenues.

Frozen foods still are a popular choice. Packaged Facts projected that retail sales of frozen foods and beverages will reach $70 billion in 2015, a 25% increase over 2010 revenues. Growth will be fueled by a trio of strong-performing categories that have been driving the category for some time: frozen pizza, handheld breakfast food and prepared vegetables. 


The category also has gotten a boost from microwavable frozen meals that serve as quick-and-easy — and inexpensive — lunches.
