HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Kmart is introducing prescription pet medications at its stores, the mass merchandise retail chain said Friday.

The company said the new program was designed to make it easier for customers to get branded and generic pet drugs and more convenient to shop for the whole family. More than 60% of American households own a pet, and families spent more than $50 billion on their pets in 2011, according to the American Pet Products Association.

By the end of 2014, all existing Kashi GoLean cereals and Kashi Chewy granola bars — representing Kashi's biggest offerings — will be verified by the Non-GMO Project, the company said. Beginning in 2015, all new Kashi foods introduced into the market will contain at least 70% organic ingredients and also will be Non-GMO Project verified.

"Our budget includes two new stores and 18 major remodels," Weis Markets vice chairman Jonathan Weis said. "In addition, we expect to soon complete the purchase of three Genuardi's units near Philadelphia which we hope to reopen later this summer."

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Kellogg's has announced the debut of its latest Crunchy Nut cereal.

New Crunchy Nut caramel nut cereal, which features golden corn flakes drizzled with caramel flavor and topped with real peanuts, now is available at stores nationwide.

Kellogg's Crunchy Nut cereal also is available in roasted nut and honey and golden honey nut varieties, Kellogg's said.

PepsiCo announced that Diet Mountain Dew, Brisk and Starbucks ready-to-drink beverages each have garnered more than $1 billion in annual retail sales, expanding the company's portfolio of billion-dollar brands to 22. PepsiCo said it has doubled the size of its billion-dollar brand portfolio since 2000, adding five new billion-dollar brands in the past five years.

NEW YORK — The maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

Irving, Texas-based Hostess Brands carried $860 million in debt and also faced high labor costs and rising prices for sugar and other ingredients that exceeded its annual sales of about $2.5 billion, according to published reports. Hostess previously filed for bankruptcy protection in 2004 and emerged in 2009.

Douglas will oversee the day-to-day merchandising, operation and management of Weis Markets’ 122 pharmacies and also will direct the company’s lifestyle initiatives’ team, which focuses on health-and-wellness issues. Douglas will report to Kurt Schertle, SVP sales and merchandising.

Douglas was a 27-year Walgreens veteran, where he was VP transforming community practice.

ATLANTA — The charitable arm of Coca-Cola has donated $60,000 to three Atlanta-based organizations that aim to reduce hunger.

The Atlanta Community Food Bank, the Salvation Army Metro Atlanta Area Command and Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless were each awarded $20,000 from the Coca-Cola Foundation. The donations are part of the foundation's “Donations in Lieu of Decorations Initiative,” which has awarded more than $500,000 to 45 organizations since 1992.

ATLANTA — Coca-Cola on Thursday announced that Geoffrey Kelly will be retiring from his post as SVP and general counsel.

Kelly, who joined the company in 1970, will retire in February 2012. He has served in the role of SVP and general counsel since 2005.

Succeeding Kelly is Bernhard Goepelt, who will take on the role of SVP general counsel and chief legal counsel, effective immediately. Kelly will remain SVP during a transition period, Coca-Cola noted.
