We have an annual holiday tradition at DSN that helped inspire the image on our cover. As the event, a group lunch at a local Chinese restaurant, dovetails with the end of college football season, we call it the “Rice Bowl.”

The Rice Bowl concludes with each person throwing in $1, and we go around the table comparing fortune cookie messages; the one with the “best” fortune as voted by the group gets the pot.

This year I finally won. I walked away with a whopping $5.

In a report titled "Salty Snacks in the U.S.," market research firm Packaged Facts found that 50 million consumers who often snack between meals consider salted snacks their favorite, while 90% of households reporting eating salty snacks in the past 30 days.

LAKELAND, Fla. — Publix Super Markets has donated $25,000 to a local hunger-relief organization, the Florida-based supermarket chain said.

Publix made the donation to Food for All as part of its Sprinkle Joy campaign, announced earlier this month on its Facebook and Twitter pages, allowing users to make virtual holiday cookies; the filling of the cookie jar triggered donations to charitable organizations.

Nearly 75% of Americans will focus on healthier eating and improving fitness, according to the survey. The results also revealed that almost a quarter of Americans will ultimately fail to keep those resolutions for more than three months.

Taro Pharmaceutical Industries plans to repurchase up to $200 million of its own shares, the Israeli generic drug maker said.

HAWTHORNE, N.Y. — Taro Pharmaceutical Industries plans to repurchase up to $200 million of its own shares, the Israeli generic drug maker said.

Taro announced a tender offer to repurchase the shares for between $84.50 and $97.50 each, with the total amount representing 4.6% to 5.3% of its outstanding shares.

The offer expires on Dec. 23, the company said.
