A company that makes an emergency treatment for severe allergic reactions is marking the 15th annual Food Allergy Awareness Week.

BASKING RIDGE, N.J. — A company that makes an emergency treatment for severe allergic reactions is marking the 15th annual Food Allergy Awareness Week.

Mylan Specialty, a division of drug maker Mylan, said it would support various initiatives to raise awareness of life-threatening food allergies during the special week, which started Sunday and ends Saturday. Mylan Specialty is the maker of EpiPen (epinephrine), used to treat anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction that can occur quickly and without warning.

A new study recently estimated that 5.9 million children in the United States suffer from a food allergy.

NEW YORK — A new study recently estimated that 5.9 million children in the United States suffer from a food allergy.

The study, published in the July issue of Pediatrics, also found that children with a tree nut or peanut allergy tend to have the most severe reactions, with nearly 39% of children ages 18 years and younger surveyed saying they had a severe or life-threatening allergy. Additionally, more than 30% of children surveyed said they suffered from multiple food allergies.

The study was funded by the Food Allergy Initiative.

Prior research had suggested just the opposite — that women experienced allergies more frequently than men.
