GlaxoSmithKline announced that a peer-reviewed study issued online by the New England Journal of Medicine has reported that GSK’s FluLaval Quadrivalent reduced flu cases among children ages 3 years to 8 years by 55.4% overall and lowered the risk of developing moderate-to-serious flu illness by 73.1%.

Bartell Drugs has started its annual flu vaccination program, the Seattle-based retail pharmacy chain said Tuesday.

SEATTLE — Bartell Drugs has started its annual flu vaccination program, the Seattle-based retail pharmacy chain said Tuesday.

Bartell said it would offer in-store vaccinations at its 61 stores and an off-site flu clinic program for businesses and retirement communities. Pharmacists can give vaccinations to anyone ages 5 years and older without appointment, though customers younger than 18 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends flu vaccinations every year for everyone ages 6 months and older.

Flu vaccinations have received a lot of attention lately, and that’s no surprise, considering the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation that everyone ages 6 months and older get yearly vaccinations, not to mention the H1N1 pandemic flu scare.

The agency's approval is for all six licensed flu vaccines for the 2012-2013 season: Afluria, made by CSL; Fluarix, made by GlaxoSmithKline; FluLaval, made by ID Biomedical; FluMist, made by MedImmune Vaccines; Fluvirin, made by Novartis; and Fluzone, made by Sanofi.

I know this older guy at my gym — I call him “The Professor,” mostly because he used to teach journalism, but also because it’s more fun to say and easier to remember than his actual name.

I know this older guy at my gym — I call him “The Professor,” mostly because he used to teach journalism, but also because it’s more fun to say and easier to remember than his actual name. He’s 85 now, and he says if he doesn’t get to the club to swim laps and sit in the steam room at least three times a week, he feels like he’s doing something wrong. He says he feels the same way about flu shots and all vaccinations for that matter.

In all, there now are 37 approved vaccine manufacturers that potentially could triple their annual production to make as much as 5.4 billion pandemic vaccinations in the event of another H1N1-type outbreak.
