SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new chemotherapy drug for treating acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the agency said Friday.

The FDA announced the approval of EUSA Pharma's Erwinaze (asparaginase Erwinia chrysanthemi) to treat patients with ALL who have developed an allergy to E. coli-derived asparaginase and pegaspargase chemotherapy drugs.

Kerr Drug's philanthropic arm is donating used company vehicles to a nonprofit group that gives the cars to low-income families, the company said Friday.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Kerr Drug's philanthropic arm is donating used company vehicles to a nonprofit group that gives the cars to low-income families, the company said Friday.

On Nov. 10, Kerr Cares for Kids donated a car to Wheels4Hope, saying it was the third vehicle donated to the organization this year. In the spring, it donated two Dodge Caravans to the organization. While the vans had more than 200,000 miles on them, the company said they were well-maintained and in good condition. All three vehicles received repairs and have since been given to families.

And if the U.S. diabetes population grows by more than 50.8% over the next two decades, as the International Diabetes Foundation attests, that'll mean there will be 38.6 million diabetics in this country by 2030. That's a lot of diabetes education that needs to happen between now and then, and what better place to have that happen than at the neighborhood drug store?

Par Pharmaceutical has completed its acquisition of Anchen Pharmaceuticals, the generic drug maker said.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. — Par Pharmaceutical has completed its acquisition of Anchen Pharmaceuticals, the generic drug maker said.

Par announced plans in August to acquire Irvine, Calif.-based Anchen for $410 million, consisting of a loan and cash it already had.

A privately owned company, Anchen has about 200 employees and more than 72,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing and warehouse space, Par said.

NEW YORK — A new machine from a company based in Wando, S.C., gives retailers a new way to sell ice cream, according to published reports.

RetailWire reported that Robofusion, founded by Allan Jones, had developed an eponymous robot that allows customers to create their own ice cream desserts.

According to the company's website, customers walk up to the machine, choose 1-of-4 "Robot Characters" that program the robot movements and effects and then design a five-layer ice cream and candy treat.

NEW YORK — Target is selling off the pharmacy business of the Zellers stores it bought as part of an effort to expand into Canada and start over, according to published reports.

Toronto-based newspaper The Globe & Mail reported that Target would sell Zellers' scripts to other retailers as it prepared to close the stores down for remodeling. The company plans to re-open them as Target stores, with pharmacies, in 2013. Industry observers value Zellers' pharmacy business at about C$500 million, according to the newspaper.

AAA forecasts 42.5 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, a 4% increase from people who traveled one year ago. This is the first significant increase in any holiday travel this year.

PRINCETON, N.J. — Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca presented an analysis Wednesday of 14 clinical trials at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions in Orlando, Fla., the companies said.

The phase-2b and phase-3 trials all involved the investigational Type 2 diabetes drug dapagliflozin and, the companies said, showed that use of the drug did not lead to an unacceptable risk to adult patients' cardiovascular health compared with other treatments.

LONDON — GlaxoSmithKline announced the results from the first of eight phase-3 clinical trials that examined the efficacy of albiglutide in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes.

The Harmony 7 trial was a 32-week, head-to-head, open-label, noninferiority study that compared albiglutide, an investigational once weekly glucagon-like peptide-1 agonist, with once-daily liraglutide. According to the results, patients administered GSK's drug saw a 0.78% reduction in HbA1C, while patients administered liraglutide saw a 0.99% reduction in HbA1C.
