That would make the Bi-Lo/Winn-Dixie combination No. 24 on Drug Store News' PoweRx50 — a list of the top 50 pharmacy retailers operating in the U.S. — falling in just behind Albertsons LLC (which posted $787 million in pharmacy revenue in 2010) and well ahead of Fred's ($628 million).

DEERFIELD, Ill. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug for high blood pressure made by Takeda, the drug maker said.

The Japanese drug maker received approval for Edarbyclor (azilsartan medoxomil and chlorthalidone) for the treatment of high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. The company called it the only fixed-dose therapy that combines an angiotensin II receptor blocker with chlorthalidone, a diuretic, in a once-daily, single tablet. The company also markets Edarbi, which only contains azilsartan medoxomil.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — An orally administered drug made by Genzyme for treating multiple sclerosis did not appear superior to a biotech drug already on the market, according to results of a late-stage clinical trial.

Genzyme, owned by French drug maker Sanofi, compared the once-daily drug teriflunomide with Rebif (interferon beta-1a), made by Pfizer and Merck KGaA, in patients with relapsing MS in the 324-patient "TENERE" trial. Merck KGaA, based in Germany, operates under the name EMD Serono in the United States to avoid confusion with U.S.-based Merck & Co.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved an HIV drug for children and adolescents, the agency said Wednesday.

The FDA announced the approval of Merck's Isentress (raltegravir) for HIV-1 infection in patients ages 2 to 18 years. The chewable form of the drug will be available for children ages 2 to 11 years.

"Many young children and adolescents are living with HIV, and this approval provides an important additional option for their treatment," FDA Office of Antimicrobial Products director Edward Cox said.

CHATSWORTH, Calif. — Rite Aid is planning to roll out 3-D holographic display kiosks in its stores next year, according to the kiosks' manufacturer.

In a letter to shareholders, Provision Interactive Technologies president and CEO Curt Thornton wrote that it would place its 3-D Reward Centers in Rite Aid stores, starting with 200 stores and, according to the agreement between the two companies, eventually installing the kiosks in up to 4,800 stores. Rite Aid currently has 4,679 stores.

SAN DIEGO — Drug maker Santarus has submitted a new drug application with the Food and Drug Administration for a treatment for ulcerative colitis, the company said.

The application was for Uceris (budesonide) tablets in the 9-mg strength for moderate active UC. The company is developing the drug under a collaboration with Cosmo Technologies.

Stater Bros., along with Stater Bros. Charities, earlier this month presented a $26,000 check to the program, which will be used to purchase toys that will be distributed to community-based organizations in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.

NORWICH, N.Y. — Chobani announced that it broke ground on a new state-of-the-art, high capacity production facility.

The domestic manufacturing plant, based in Twin Falls, Idaho, will span 940,000 sq. ft. This facility, Chobani said, will create more than 400 jobs and allow the company to bring product innovations to market.

Production at the new plant is anticipated to start in the second half of 2012.
