WASHINGTON — Advocacy on behalf of pharmacy at the state level has won recognition from the National Association of Chain Drug Stores for a pharmacy school in West Virginia.

The NACDS said it gave its RxImpact “U” Advocacy Award to students Katrina Thompson and John Hudson from the University of Charleston School of Pharmacy for their leadership in organizing student participation in a Pharmacist’s Legislative Day at the West Virginia State Capitol.

R. Keith Harrison, P&G's global product supply officer, will retire Sept. 1, after more than 41 years of service. Harrison will serve as officer on special assignment, reporting to Bob McDonald, chairman, president and CEO.

PITTSBURGH — A subsidiary of Mylan has won approval to sell a generic drug for HIV and AIDS in developing countries under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.

Mylan announced Thursday that Matrix Labs won Food and Drug Administration approval for zidovudine tablets in the 100-mg strength. The drug is a generic version of ViiV Healthcare’s Retrovir, an antiretroviral sold as a water-dispersible tablet. The drug is designed to treat HIV and AIDS in children and prevent transmission of the virus from pregnant mothers to their children.

Retired Leiner Health SVP marketing Bob LaFerriere, 62, passed Feb. 4 from multiple myeloma, according to reports.

TRABUCO CANYON, Calif. — Retired Leiner Health SVP marketing Bob LaFerriere, 62, passed Feb. 4 from multiple myeloma, according to reports.

LaFerriere was a 40-year drug industry veteran who started at Thrifty Drug and Discount Stores scooping ice cream. In 1992, LaFerrierre left Thrifty as SVP purchasing to become president and CEO at Slim Fast Foods. He later joined Leiner Health as SVP marketing and retired in 2008.

LaFerriere is survived by his wife, Jill, and his sons, Chad and Matt.

Both products will be fueled by the patented FRS quercetin formula, the company said. Quercetin, recently granted GRAS — generally recognized as safe — status by the Food and Drug Administration, is the natural energy-boosting antioxidant contained in all FRS products. To date, FRS Healthy Energy products contain the highest level of quercetin (QU995) on the market, the company claimed.

Giant-Carlisle acquired the 53,000-sq.-ft. former Genuardi’s store from Safeway in Feasterville, Pa., in November 2010 and said the renovated store will look more like a modern Giant prototype.

NEW YORK — Fourth-quarter net sales for Inter Parfums experienced a slight decline to $11.2 million, compared with $112.9 million in the year-ago period.

Sales from the company's European-based operations dropped to $95.5 million during the quarter, which ended Dec. 31, 2010, from $96.3 million during fourth quarter 2009. U.S. operations, however, increased 2%, bringing the sales total to $17 million.

Merck is seeking approval for Saflutan (tafluprost) ophthalmic solution, an investigational drug for relieving eye pressure in patients with glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

Dick Durbin, D-Ill., that would limit the fees charged to retail merchants on debit card transactions (known as “swipe fees”) to a level that is “reasonable and proportionate” to the costs incurred by the banks and credit card associations to process these transactions.
