The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic treatment for iron deficiency anemia made by Watson Pharmaceuticals, Watson said Thursday.

MORRISTOWN, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic treatment for iron deficiency anemia made by Watson Pharmaceuticals, Watson said Thursday.

The drug maker announced the approval of Nulecit (sodium ferric gluconate complex in sucrose), an injectable and generic version of Sanofi-Aventis’ Ferrlecit.

The drug is used to treat iron deficiency anemia in adults and children ages 6 years and older undergoing chronic hemodialysis and receiving supplemental epoetin therapy.

AUSTIN, Texas — Proving that natural food stores have a sense of humor, Whole Foods hosted a faux website home page to celebrate April Fools' Day.

The homepage featured such items as "insects raised with compassion," stinky cheese lipstick and bizarre recipes. The retailer even featured a video about finding love at its stores on both the website and its Facebook fan page. Needless to say, it received many "likes."

FRISCO, Texas — Specialty pharmacy group Assured Pharmacy said that same-store sales for January totaled $1.42 million, a 28.5% increase over the year-ago period.

Compared with December 2010 sales, however, January same-store sales decreased 5.6% from sales of about $1.5 million. The revenue drop, Assured said, was due to "seasonality," noting that many patients experienced insurance carrier and coverage changes.

HYDERABAD, India — Indian generic drug maker Aurobindo has received two approvals from the Food and Drug Administration.

The company said Wednesday that it received approval for galantamine tablets in the 4-, 8- and 12-mg strengths. The drug is a version of Johnson & Johnson’s Alzheimer’s treatment Razadyne; various versions of the drug had sales of $41 million during the 12 months ended in September 2010, according to IMS Health.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Total and front-end same-store sales at Rite Aid decreased during March, while pharmacy sales and prescriptions filled increased, the pharmacy retailer said Thursday.

Compared with last year, front-end same-store sales decreased by 1.8% during the four-week period that ended March 26, which the 4,711-store chain attributed to Easter falling on a later date this year, April 24, than last year, when it occurred on April 4.
