The healthcare industry has always had its fair share of buzz words and the pharmacy sector is no exception, said Emdeon's Kevin Mahoney. Medication synchronization, outcomes, clinical services, medication therapy management, accountable care organizations… our conferences and publications are full of experts discussing how pharmacies can successfully participate in these new opportunities. What I find to be so interesting in this new crop of go-to phrases is they all really boil down to one common element and that is patient care.

As I look around my part of the country, I can’t help but notice that leaves are starting to change colors, football fans of all flavors are gearing up for competition and pharmacies are stocked up with flu vaccine – ready to begin administration of the annual flu shots.

Can one of the nation’s premier specialty pharmacies maintain its focus on each patient it serves while simultaneously smashing its own growth records and reaching national power-player status in the rarified world of specialized medication services?

So is it true that all leaders have vision? Or put another way, can leaders be effective without vision? asks Dave Wendland, VP of Hamacher Resource Group. My instincts suggest that a prerequisite to effective leadership is the ability to create and ignite vision.

One of my favorite Japanese proverbs states:

“Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare.”

Emdeon's Gene Boerger said pharmacies are busily expanding into providing medical services, including providing basic healthcare screenings and immunization services. As a result, they are becoming healthcare providers, over and above their traditional roles. But just how well they are able to integrate within the healthcare continuum over the long term depends upon the strength of the bonds they are able to build with payers and medical providers … and those relationships are rooted in data connectivity.

The healthcare industry continues to prepare for ACA implementation and the expected influx of newly eligible patients, said Emdeon's Kevin Mahoney. Many pharmacies are changing their staffing models in preparation for customers with expanded Medicaid benefits — especially as we approach the New Year. This is a good time for me to remind you to be thinking about your eligibility program.

In January, I offered Drug Store News readers a look at the pharmacy and technology trends facing our industry for the year. Here we are in June (can you believe it?), so I thought we should have a progress check and update for the back half of 2013.

Risk is everywhere in our lives. The trick, as Mr. Buffett says, is to manage it through knowledge. Your exposure to risk in the pharmacy businesses may come about from various sources.

Theft, litigation, competition, financial risk, risk that you will see Emdeon’s VP of Pharmacy Sales, Richard Brook in a Harlem Shake video…. and audit risk.

Looking good is feeling good. It may sound cliché, but the reality is that there’s a meaningful correlation between health and beauty, and consumers who are proactive about their health also take a greater interest in their personal appearance.

For a vendor that has never done business with Amazon, understanding how to fully harness the potential of the world’s largest online retailer might seem equally as daunting as standing at the foot of the world’s largest rainforest without a map or a compass.

But according to Chance Wales, director and category leader of U.S. health and beauty for Amazon, it’s easier than you think.

Since 2008, the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions has surveyed consumers to asses their views about their own health and how they navigate the healthcare system. The result has been a consumer behavioral and attitudinal segmentation study that it has updated ever since.

Success in the mass market can be an uphill battle for some niche brands as retailers trim selection, bolster private-label offerings and pass on smaller brands they perceive as higher risk. However, retailers also are increasingly looking to distinguish themselves from the competition, whether it is through exclusive offerings, customization or in-store services.

However, retailers also are increasingly looking to distinguish themselves from the competition, whether it is through exclusive offerings, customization or in-store services. This has given rise to the importance of business development organizations, master brokers, regional brokers, and sales and marketing consultants in helping niche brands navigate the path to retail.

In today’s world, April is the time to begin preparations for the wave of patients who will start visiting pharmacies as early as August to be immunized. On the heels of a severe flu season, past trends suggest the demand for flu shots this year will be tremendous, says Emdeon's Mike Carmody.

Spring is one of my favorite times of the year. It signals the end of many things and the start of others. Winter becomes spring. Flowers bloom. March Madness wraps up and The Masters’ tee off. Flu season transforms into flu season. Skiing and snowboarding melt into surfing and kayaking.

Wait, what? Flu season transforms into flu season?

With just about 90 days to go until the start of the first-ever Total Store Expo in Las Vegas this August, DSN convened executives from leading consumer health and consumer packaged goods companies for a frank and wide-ranging discussion about how their companies are preparing to win at TSE. The show — which will combine the National Association of Chain Drug Stores’ former Marketplace, Supply Chain and Logistics, and Pharmacy and Technology conferences into one new mega-show — will bring together retail executives and suppliers from all three fields.

In my last UpMarketing post, Dart and Science, I described how combining quantitative and qualitative research with good old-fashioned gut instincts can drive results. This post examines a related topic: big data. Everyone’s talking about the mountains of data at their fingertips, just waiting for analysis and action. But it seems that no one has figured out an effective way to begin excavating to find the hidden treasure.

One major theme resonating across the show floor at HIMSS13 was the importance of interoperability within healthcare ecosystems. Emdeon's Lathe Bigler discusses how interoperability in the pharmacy space has been centered on advances in e-prescribing and clinical messaging.

In early March, more than 30,000 healthcare industry participants swarmed upon New Orleans for the annual HIMSS conference. In the words of keynote speaker James Carville, this is the Super Bowl of conventions. Most attendees arrived on Sunday to discover a water outage warning. Even when the water pressure returned to normal, the message was clear — do not drink it! On Monday morning, there was not a latte to be found in the entire city. We were roughing it…

In November 2012, The Drug Store News Group hosted in New York an exclusive roundtable discussion of leading pharmacy retailers and a handful of key vendors. Moderated by special guest Dave Wendland of Hamacher Resource Group, the panel tackled a wide range of issues, including how to expand pharmacist accessibility for patients with diabetes; measuring and managing patient outcomes; government reform and the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act; and the use of complementary and alternative medicines.

Merchandising in the OTC space has certainly changed over the past decade. Gone is the “stack-‘em-high-and-let-‘em-fly” approach to planogramming. It’s a cleaner, less-cluttered shopping experience. And the complexity behind that shopping experience is changing.

Ironically, Einstein also said “if we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?”
