CARLISLE, Pa. — Giant-Carlisle has opened its 100th gas station, the supermarket chain said.

Giant-Carlisle, officially known as Giant Food Stores and owned by Ahold, said the gas station opened at a store in Souderton, Pa. The chain offers a loyalty program, Gas Extra Rewards, that provides discounts on gas when people shop at the supermarket's front end and pharmacy.

The station currently is a Mobil and is located near a ShopRite grocery store on the same block that opened in April, and marks ShopRite’s second branded gas station, according to reports. The first station is located in Middletown, N.Y. The new 16-pump station will offer discounts to holders of the grocer’s Price Plus Club card.

CARLISLE, Pa. — Royal Ahold banner Giant-Carlisle has opened a new gas station near a store in Lancaster, Pa., the supermarket chain said.

The company opened the station on Thursday morning, within walking distance of the Giant Food Store on Centerville Road.

The gas station features a new, 1,000-sq.-ft. “grab and go” kiosk, which will offer products for motorists, such as chilled beverages, coffee, snacks, car products, a lottery machine, an ATM and Giant-brand milk and bread.

CHICAGO — Consumers today are a lot less skittish about rising gas prices than they were in 2008, Nielsen reported.

“Unlike 2008, when the average price for regular gas jumped above $4 a gallon, today’s improving job market and strengthening economy are helping consumers cope better than during this recent economic downturn,” wrote Todd Hale, SVP consumer and shopper insights for Nielsen, in a report released Thursday.

One supermarket operator is literally driving customers to its pharmacies.

Customers at Royal Ahold’s Giant-Landover stores can earn one Gas Rewards point for every dollar spent on purchases in Giant pharmacies in Maryland, most of Virginia, Delaware and Washington, D.C. With the program, for example, a $20 pharmaceutical co-pay earns 20 points and a $50 pharmacy purchase earns 50 points. For every 100 Gas Rewards points earned, shoppers save 10 cents off every gallon of gas bought at Giant and participating Shell gas stations.

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. — Supermarket retailer Tops Friendly Markets has opened its first stand-alone gas station at the site of a former Valero gas station, the chain said.

Tops, which operates 132 supermarkets in upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania, said the gas station has six pumps and a 1,600-sq.-ft. convenience store, rebranded as Tops Fresh Xpress.
