ISELIN, N.J. — Ansell, the makers of LifeStyles Condoms, announced the launch of Epic, a new sexual enhancement product for males.

Epic is a quick-drying topical spray that delays ejaculation by reducing the sensitivity of the penis. The spray features DermaSys technology, a patented transdermal delivery system which optimizes topical delivery through a highly effective absorption process. It also contains Lidocaine, a mild anesthetic that begins working almost immediately after application.

A study conducted by Beijing Friendship Hospital published Tuesday found that condoms may help prevent vaginal infection.

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — A study conducted by Beijing Friendship Hospital published Tuesday found that condoms may help prevent vaginal infection.

The study examined 164 married women, ages 18 to 45, all in good health. Seventy-two of them were using condoms for birth control. The women using condoms were found to have higher levels of beneficial bacteria or lactobacillus, which is thought to block harmful bacteria from causing odor and infection.

Personal lubricant sales were similarly down — falling 5.3% to $207.5 million. Only sales of personal massagers were up 5.6%, but on a relatively tiny base of $25.7 million.

Sales of personal lubricants were down 5.2% to $207.5 million in sales for the 52 weeks ended Oct. 6, according to IRI across total U.S. multi-outlets. A big part of that decrease is due to new Food and Drug Administration regulations that require lubricant manufacturers to submit a 501k medical device application for approval.

The company said it was updating its crowd-sourced wrapper design mix and would accept designs from August 23 through November 23 as part of the One Pride Design Contest.

There hasn't been a lot of growth in intimacy health lately, with the exception of intimacy enhancement devices, which are up 16.5% to a relatively small $26.2 million base for the 52 weeks ended June 16, according to IRI. Additionally, since it's water-based, it can be safely used with latex condoms, the company noted.

Condom use is higher among black and Hispanic Americans than among white Americans and those from other racial groups, according to findings from the largest nationally representative study of sexual and sexual health behaviors ever fielded, conducted by Indiana University sexual health researchers and published last week in a special issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
