The J.M. Smucker Co. is introducing new breakfast mixes to its Hungry Jack line for the holiday season, the food products manufacturer said Wednesday.

ORRVILLE, Ohio — The J.M. Smucker Co. is introducing new breakfast mixes to its Hungry Jack line for the holiday season, the food products manufacturer said Wednesday.

The new products include waffle and pancake mix varieties that the company said would help families "bring back breakfast." They include the Complete Belgian Waffle Mix and such seasonal pancake mix varieties as pumpkin spice, cinnamon spice and Easy Pack Funfetti Holiday Buttermilk Pancake Mix.

Diamond Foods has cut the fat from its Kettle potato chips brand.

SALEM, Ore. — Diamond Foods has cut the fat from its Kettle potato chips brand.

The company said that Kettle now will carry reduced-fat versions of its sea salt, sea salt & vinegar and salt & fresh ground pepper potato chip varieties. Kettle's reduced-fat sea salt chips already have hit store shelves, touting a suggested retail price of $3.49.

The additional reduced-fat chips will make their way to retail next month. The sea salt & vinegar variety will be available in "Krinkle cut," a ridge-style chip, the company added.

ATLANTA — Many states need to improve healthy food access to promote healthy eating habits and curb obesity among children, according to a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC's "2011 Children's Food Environment State Indicator Report" found that 32-out-of-50 states (along with the District of Columbia) scored at or below the national average for the Modified Retail Food Environment Index, a measure of the proportion of food retailers that typically sell healthy foods within a state.

Value is a big issue for consumers when it comes to purchasing snacks. Research from SymphonyIRI Group revealed that 80% of consumers actively look for the best value when buying snacks, and 42% are cutting back on money spent on snacks.

Meanwhile, competition is increasing from fast food chains that are adding smaller-sized snackable foods to their menus.
